When homeowners Judy and Don sat down with their architect, Gary Tran of Tran Architecture, to redesign their Houston home, they made a big (and surprising) decision: flip the layout. They put the kitchen and living room on the second floor and all the bedrooms on the first floor. Thus, public rooms will have treetop views. They also kept the bedrooms on the small side to force the family to live together in one common room. (Smart!)
The couple wanted their kitchen to be the heart of the home, and to achieve that, they needed an island big enough for morning coffee, cooking, homework and more. The resulting extra-wide fixture packs it all in—even room for a sink and a shelf for a cookbook. Can you even imagine having such a big island?
Other things to covet: the fridge’s chalkboard door (the perfect place to write down a grocery or shopping list for the week!), wood on the ceiling, and fun colors.
As the kitchen is on the second floor, it gets plenty of natural light. Look at those windows! There are many! To make up for the lost closet space, there are some open shelves in front of the window, which add storage space but still let in light.
