By pouring concrete pads or concrete posts, you ensure that your shed will stand the test of time.
A cement cast base keeps your storage shed off the ground, prevents tipping and shifting, and keeps the shed safe during storms.
Pouring your own reinforced concrete foundation is the basic platinum standard. When you take the time to do it right, you know you’re getting a structure that will last.
However, these foundations take longer to build, require building permits, and cost more than less robust structures.
Sq Ft Cabin Proves Why Not All Tiny Houses Need A Loft
You have to weigh the options. If you want a lightweight shed to house some non-essential items, perhaps a poured concrete foundation isn’t for you. However, if you want your shed to last for years, take the time to pour concrete.
This category includes deck footers, wooden skids and concrete blocks. Non-permanent options do not last as long as permanent options. However, there are several reasons to use this option.
First of all, if you don’t need a solid shed, why take the time to pour concrete. Second, you may be planning to move out of your current home. If this happens, the temporary shed can be dismantled and moved to your new home.
Finally, some areas do not require a building permit for a temporary shed. However, check all codes in your area.
How To Build A 10×12 Barn Style Shed With A Loft?
If you are in an area that receives heavy rainfall but has low winds or sub-zero temperatures, a quality resin with a non-permanent base will do a better job.
However, if you live in an area that experiences freezing temperatures in the winter and stormy weather year-round, a permanent foundation is the most practical option.

There are several ways to build a shed foundation. It all depends on how much money you want to spend. If you live in a snowy or windy area, your foundation may be different than in a less harsh area. You can find more information about the main types here.
Since this shed was built in California where there is no snow, the base is made of solid concrete blocks. You can purchase these blocks at your local hardware store, such as HomeDepot. This basic method is relatively simple, inexpensive, and doesn’t require a lot of dirt digging.
Level the floor first to remove any slopes and high/low areas. Next, take the 4x8x16 concrete blocks and place them according to the dimensions provided. Draw measurements diagonally from the four corners to check that the dimensions are the same. This ensures that the base is a perfect square. Use string or a straight board to make sure all the blocks are at the same height.
To prevent premature rotting of the foundation due to moisture in the soil, it is advisable to use pressure treated lumber. The wood is treated with chemicals to retain moisture and prevent rotting.
How Much Does A 10×20 Shed Cost?
Take a 12 foot long pressure treated 2×6 board and place it on top of the concrete block as shown in the photo. Since the concrete block is 8” wide and the 2×6 is 5 ½” wide, move the side boards to the outside edge of the block and the 2×6 to the center of the base, aligning them to the center of the block.
Second, the main frame boards are equally spaced. For example, look at the diagram in step 3. If you remove a board that lays flat on the concrete, then some of the major planks will land on the concrete block and some won’t. So planks that don’t land on concrete blocks have a long life and bend over time. It lowers some floor areas and raises others.
The third reason is that you don’t need to install Simpson Strong-Tie joist hangers on every base frame board because these 2×6 boards lay flat on the concrete blocks.
The main frame is also made of pressure-treated wood due to its proximity to the ground and exposure to moisture.
Choosing A 10×20 Shed
Take two 2×6 boards 12 feet long and lay them flat on top of the concrete blocks. One board is at the outer left end and the other is on the opposite side. These 12 foot boards are then fastened together with vertical 2×6 boards spaced 16 inches apart. Attach these vertical 2×6 boards with 2 ½” nails or screws.
Similar to step 1, draw measurements diagonally from the four corners, making sure they are evenly spaced.
After the vertical boards are installed, you will need to add additional 2×6 boards to the plywood, as plywood is usually supplied in 4’x8′ sheets. See diagram step 4 for plywood design.
When placing the plywood over the foundation frame, all four edges of the 4’x8′ plywood must rest on the 2×6 boards. If the plywood doesn’t land on the 2×6 board, there’s nothing to mess with. This causes the plywood to bend or break over time.
