600 Sq Ft Cabin With Loft – Over Memorial Day weekend and my 27th birthday, Matt and I wanted to hang out and enjoy each other’s company. We searched AirBNB for a small cabin in the mountains of North Carolina and found the perfect place for an unforgettable weekend.
This 830 square foot frame cottage is located just outside Asheville in an “intentional” community of artists and professors. Inspired by a trip to Scandinavia, a family of four designed and built this outdoor log cabin as their peaceful retreat. The kitchen, dining room and living room merge into one, double height with high vaults. A spacious sleeping loft above the bedroom and bathroom opens onto a bright living room. A large deck extends the main outdoor space where we gazed at the starry sky or listened to the constant buzzing of bees.

I was fascinated by the place. A simple palette of materials allows the space to speak for itself. It does not need decorations and paints and is beautiful in itself. The furniture that was there was functional – for storage (like an old house in the kitchen) or for accommodating additional guests (up to 7 people). I enjoyed watching the cabin being built. I could easily read the structural logic of exposed beams and columns.

The nights were cool so we made good use of the wood stove. The cabin was so present that an extremely dark chimney extended to the entire height of the room. We actually slept on the futons because we really enjoyed being in the main area. So we actually lived in only 375 square meters of the cabin.

Size: 14″ x 27″, includes two lofts connected by a bridge, large dining room, wood burning stove, screened porch and bathroom.
Located on 20 hectares, the house is embedded in a rock covered with mature pines, which complicates traditional construction techniques. For the safety and convenience of construction, the roof is assembled outside the construction site and mounted in one piece (crane) on the wooden structure. The nearby sauna was built using the same methods. This remote cabin overlooks the pond. The family was on a tight budget, but also loved the outdoors, avid hikers and canoeists, so they took a less-is-more approach.
What we like: The online cabin has no indoor plumbing, electricity or bathroom. Their only source of heat is a wood-burning stove, as well as a fire pit they use for family gatherings to roast marshmallows. They wanted their cabin to look like it had always been there. We think they achieved that goal, how about you?

Above: Step ladders save space and are more practical than a ladder. Another space-saving feature is the kitchen island on wheels. It serves dual purposes as a cooking area and a casual dining area.
Above: On the main level, you’ll find the kitchen, living and dining areas, as well as a screened-in porch. This floor is heated by a wood stove. A central staircase leads to two bedrooms connected by a bridge. Natural light illuminates this loft to the left through end gable windows.
Above: The kitchen window offers a Zen view of the marshy lake and the desert beyond. Wildlife can also be observed here, which makes for great entertainment.

Above: A sleeping loft surrounds a living room that sleeps seven comfortably. In the evening, the three children hang out and play on the bridge and peek into the kitchen while dinner is being served. Since this rustic cabin is out of business, they use lantern light to illuminate the interior at night.
Above: Its entrance/wing off the cockpit offers plenty of storage space for the family. This seat extends from the side of the cabin.
Fun fact: The owners of the log house bought this property a few years ago with the dream of building this modest home after saving money. By then, they had built a fixed wooden platform to accommodate a large tent and an auxiliary campsite.
