First things first: white paint colors aren’t really white. To understand that, you need to understand LRV.

The Best White Paint Colors For Trim

The light reflectance value or LRV of any paint is a number assigned based on how much light the color reflects, 0 being black and 100 being pure white. The higher the number, the more light is reflected.

However, no white color has an LRV of 100. Sherwin Williams High Reflective White (one of the most reflective paints you can find) is 93. Anything 80 or higher is considered white, and “white” can range from ~70-80. So you have to ask yourself how bright (closer to LVV 90) or softer white (closer to LRV 80) you want your white to be.

And when you talk about “soft” whites, bright whites, colors (i.e. undertones) are added to soften less bright whites. Another color of “off-white” paint is:

First of all, you need to think about the process. Generally speaking, warm whites will help create a sense of comfort, and they pair well with other traditional spaces. Cool whites, on the other hand, can be too crisp and dry. These are guidelines, but a good starting point if you know you like a more classic or more modern style.

Best Neutral Paint Colors That Never Go Out Of Style

Second, you need to consider the natural light in the house. A north-facing room (at least in the Northern Hemisphere) has slightly cooler light, while a south-facing room has warmer light. So if your home faces north, you may want to choose a slightly warmer white color to balance out the cooler natural light. And it is opposite to the south facing room.

East- or west-facing rooms are tricky because the quality of light in these rooms changes throughout the day, but suffice it to say that sunset light in a west-facing room can be orange or pink. This can be a problem if the light entering your home is filtered by lots of wood or shutters that can reflect their colors into your home.

Finally, you should test the color of the area. White is the most important color for lighting, floors and other things in the space… so I always try 2-3 colors before I do it. It’s worth the hard work!

As I said, it’s important to test your paint shade in your actual space, especially with whites. I’ve never had a problem getting paint on all my walls, but I understand that sometimes it can be difficult. Due to the difficulties in finding paint samples these days, I am happy to share a better alternative.

Best White Paint Colors To Brighten Up A Space

Samples will send you paper made with reusable peels and real ink. It allows you to move the sample around the room to catch different lights. I hope this tool is as useful to me as it has been to me!

After years of painting my house and helping clients with their colors, these are now my go-to white paint colors.

This is suitable for many interior designers. It is a light aged white (LRV 82) with a clear note. But, unlike most pure white paint colors, the underside is beige or greige instead of yellow. It creates a beautiful, elegant space that still feels comfortable. It has a lot in common with Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee.

The shade of white is similar to Alabaster, but with a slight touch of yellow (slight, in fact, my husband swears they’re the same style.

The Best White Paint Colors

One of my favorite warm white colors, White Duck is white and soft white. It still leans towards the brown in its base rather than the true yellow that makes it a dark warm neutral. With an LRV of 73, it doesn’t shine as much in the sun as it would with a higher LRV, making it a good choice for exterior paint colors. Exterior paint colors, in general, read lighter than they do indoors. As for the interior color, it’s darker than what you see below, but still soft and rich.

If you want to soften white walls without reading them too warm, a gray, elegant white is a good option instead of white. Aesthetic white is no longer cool, however, it’s actually a light gray, and it’s a good choice if you have light colors coming into the space. For example, in our last house, our bedroom had only one window facing the red brick house. A lot of light from the window bounces off the neighbor’s house and casts a wonderful pink color into the room. Off-white captures just the right amount of light and neutral floors don’t make the room look pink or purple.

All the bedrooms and bathrooms in my house are Behr Cameo White – I’m not sure I could give a better recommendation! 🙂 My favorite Behr white paint color, it blends really well with beautiful gray and Carrara marble (one of my favorite things). It’s not particularly cool, but it reads like a true soft white with an LRV of 81.

Similar to Cameo White, Snowbound is on the cool side and true, pure white on the walls. With an LRV of 83, it’s soft and elegant enough to outshine furniture and artwork.

A list like this cannot be complete without an honorable mention. My go-to shades of white from Sherwin Williams are definitely Sherwin-Williams Pure White (SW 7005) and Extra White (SW 7006).

A pure white with an LRV of 84 is slightly softer than an extra white with an LRV of 86. Pure white also has a slightly warm touch. However, both make great cabinet and cutting colors, and can pair well with your white walls (for example: a soft, clean white skin with alabaster walls) or provide a clear contrast (for example, gray walls matched with white trim). ). If you’re looking for white, SW High Reflective White, Benjamin Moore Simply White, or Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace are all good choices. Simply put the white is warmer than the other two, but with the 91-93 LRVs, those three are some of the brightest models available.

As for Benjamin Moore’s white colors, White Dove has the same LRV of 85 as SW Pure White but is slightly warmer. And Decorator’s White has an LRV of 84 (same as SW Extra White) and has a nice flavor of its own.

I hope you found this helpful! Have you tried any of these colors? Do you have a favorite? i want to know I get more questions about the color white in my paintings than anything else. Paint is something that people always struggle with, especially when it comes to cabinetry and millwork, it’s an important decision and one that can’t be “fixed” easily. This guide is in my new book (along with the Best Neutrals and Nursery Palette too!) but it’s hard to find in print so I thought I’d repeat it here with some tips.

When you choose white for cabinetry and trim, consider the lighting in your unique space and, always, focus on multiple walls. Whites look different with different colors and light paths, so your home won’t look like it does in the store. Always paint the sample cabinet doors in the exact color and sheen you plan to use (we usually use a satin sheen for kitchen cabinets). Smaller chips don’t give you enough information about its performance. If you plan to combine white cabinets with your cabinets, you should order two. Remember that no two white floor tiles are exactly alike (shades vary), so you’ll need to choose one that matches your chosen cabinet finish or choose a cabinet color to coordinate with the tile you’ve chosen.

The cabinets and trim in this kitchen are Ben Moore Chantilly lace – this is a very clean white.

My family room board is Ben Moore White Dove which has a slightly rich undertone. We use this extensively in many traditional homes.
