Benjamin Moore Classic Grey Oc 23 – In the world of white, Benjamin Moore Classic Gray (OC-23) is a gray shade that reads white in a room where white is not good. It is a warm light with a small green color that you will not see and a red light of a cooler light. Sometimes it can read warm it’s almost beige, and other times it can read light gray.
This is the first in the All About Paint Colors series, where we share everything we’ve learned in the trenches about paint colors.

All About Benjamin Moore Classic Gray (oc 23) Classic Gray
Only White has an LRV of 74.8 making it a very light greige, or a dark off-white. LRV is an abbreviation of Light Reflectance Value, which is a measure of how light (LRV = 100) or dark (LRV = 0) the color is.
Use only when your room is dark, or if you have a lot of green outside. This is one of the best solutions for updating interiors with a Tuscan finish.
This is a beautiful color for any exposure – north, south, east or west. It is so light it often looks white. In a dark room, north-east, it can flash a little gray, and it is in the east and west positions every hour of the day. It looks soft white and beautiful in the southern part of the room.
The challenge with the white color that seems counterintuitive is that you need a lot of light to bring out the white color. A dark room will have many shadows making the white color appear blurry. Another challenge is the bricks showing everything; Grass, your neighbor’s colors, pink flowers, even evergreen trees. The bright light reflects all the colors around them. Classic gray will neutralize all the surrounding colors.
The Best Benjamin Moore Paint Colors
One more thing… We do not recommend trying to match Classic Gray or other Benjamin Moore colors with Sherwin-Williams, Behr or other manufacturers. Color patterns are hard to replicate, and white is especially hard to get right. Read more about color mixing here.
The staircase below features classic gray with simple white trim. We love how it accentuates the beautiful brass statue. This color goes well with warm metals like brass and nickel.
Pure white colors such as Chantilly Lace (BM OC-65), Oxford White (BM 869) and Extra White (SW 7006) look clean and crisp with classic gray. Off-whites such as Simply White (BM OC-117) and Cloud White (OC-130) look good with this color as well. Stay away from plain white colors like White Dove or colored ones like Swiss Coffee because there won’t be enough contrast and the combination will look like a mistake.
In a bathroom, or a room with a high ceiling, you can paint the ceiling in Classic Gray just like the walls, like in the bedroom below. This bedroom is a difficult one to paint because of the east exposure and the green and blue contrast. In the summer, the green trees make this room look like a wooden house, but it can make the white walls look green. We tried SW Incredible White (favorite color), and it looks like pink. Eastern exposure is difficult, and classic gray makes them easier.

Classic gray is a great color for an all-white exterior palette, and will show more from the outside than you’d expect.
It’s also one of our little secrets for exterior trim painting. When choosing outdoor colors, it’s good to remember that sunlight makes colors appear 5 times more than inside. In our sunny Colorado, it looks 10 times brighter! We like to use this color as an exterior color because it is not too bright to use with brick, not too yellow like sugar colors. That’s right! It can look beautiful as white for exterior color. Check out the classic gray trim in this stunning home below. The owner (and the painter) was skeptical, but it worked!
Classic gray is a beautiful color called white. Wear it anywhere, but combine it with a light color and off-white like Chantilly lace and plain white. As always, don’t forget to check your colors! Learn all about color testing here.

Seriously, I can’t believe I haven’t done a review on this color! Not only is it one of my favorite colors in warm gray, but it’s also one of my readers’ favorites! That’s it, two hits with one wet noodle.
Love to see scary shades of blue, purple or green – and classic gray is no exception. But the key to choosing the color you like is knowing what you’re dealing with before you slap it on the wall, so you have me (I’m not just pretty you know…) .
Benjamin Moore’s Most Popular Neutrals
Classic Gray is a white, warm gray with soft, muted, slightly feminine tones. If you don’t like blue or green tones, this could be for you!
So you should read it, but here’s the gist: LRV refers to how light or dark a color is based on a scale of 0-100 and each color has an LRV number. The closer the number is to 100, the brighter the color. The closer it is to 0, the darker the color. Done!
Now that that’s out of the way, let’s go back to classic gray. Classic Gray has an LRV of almost 75,
