Sherwin Williams Woodscapes Semi Transparent Stain Colors – Stains in general, as well as deck stains, have become one of the most problematic paint shrinkage challenges in recent years. In particular, the project is more challenging due to strict new regulations limiting the amount of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in paint. As a house painter in Westchester County, New York, I’m looking for stain products that protect and beautify wood surfaces, are mildew resistant, easy to apply, can withstand the elements, and most importantly, are environmentally safe. Arborcoat Stain® is available in clear, semi-clear, semi-solid and solid colors. It is 100% acrylic, formulated to penetrate and protect wood, resist wear, and beautify wood surfaces on decks, siding, and railings. The fact that it is 100% acrylic makes it an excellent solution for mold prone areas and surfaces. Arborcoat Stain® can be applied to new wood under pressure and is suitable for softwoods such as cedar and pine. However, I would avoid using it on hardwoods like mahogany, walnut and oak.

One of the main features I love about Arborcoat stain is its ease of application and concealing properties in solid colors. Clear and Translucent Arboarcoat Stains® must be coated with Arborcoat Clear (636). It is a low gloss protective coating that protects stained surfaces from weathering. The good news is that this clear coat can be applied when you stain the deck. If you are wondering what stain to use on pine wood, there is no wrong answer. We hope that looking at these examples will help you decide.

For a lighter effect, I love the look of White Wash by Varathane. It really brightens the colors of the wood, but it has a clear finish so it doesn’t look too white.

It reminds me of our wall color – Sherwin Williams Gray – but in a transparent way.

Early American by Varathane is our favorite dark wood stain. It has a rich gray color but still allows the wood grain to shine through.

How I Stained Our Deck With Sherwin Williams

If your boards vary in dryness, the drier areas will absorb more dirt and therefore the color will be darker.

Most projects only require one coat of stain. Apply with a lint-free cloth or foam paint brush and then use a cloth to remove excess.

It depends on your presence. My favorites are Early American (dark gray), Whitewash (white), and Sun Bleach (very light gray).

It totally depends on the look you want. However, it is very difficult to paint the knots in pine wood. It is often better to embrace the knots and grains and go with the stain instead!

Applying a pre-stain wood conditioner can also aid the dryness of the pine board and allow the stain to absorb more evenly.

Dry the wooden boards unevenly. A dry sponge absorbs more dirt than a less dry one (just as a dry sponge can absorb more water than a wet sponge). These spots then appear darker than adjacent areas. Use a pre-stained wood conditioner to remove the dryness of the wood and reduce the stain.

Applying too much stain will cause the stain to dry out, stick, and stick. Don’t panic – while the stain is still wet, use a cloth or paper towel to blot up excess. Wipe in the direction of the wood grain for best results!

It only takes five or ten minutes. I usually wait until I’ve finished painting the entire piece and go back and spot where I’ve started to stain.

Hello friend! Thank you so much for the great love you put into revealing our backyard changes. The reception has been incredible and we are really enjoying our new place…before this uncontrollable and very violent heat wave hit our area and it has been over 106 for a few weeks. There will be unbearable. Needless to say, I can’t wait for this to pass so we can go back to spending more time outside. Despite the recent heat, we actually felt the heat before the outdoor space was finished during one of the biggest projects of the entire renovation: staining the deck. Luckily I was able to finish it before the real water got here. Today I will share the process of how to do the project.

The biggest goal I want for my outdoor space is to look like the interior of our home. I really wanted to blur the lines between indoor and outdoor and knew that staining the deck would be a big factor in helping the end result. As beautiful as natural redwood is, I really don’t want it to look or feel like a standard wood deck. I love the warmth of our wood floor color indoors and hope to replicate it outside.

Because we used redwood, we had to wait several months after it was built before we could stain or apply a protective coating. It allows the wood and oil to dry completely, so it accepts stains well and gives excellent color results. Construction finished in February and we let it dry for 5 months before painting it in July. If you’re working with a wood like pine or Douglas fir, you won’t need as long (if at all) before staining. Once I came up with a game plan for how to tackle the project, I placed an order for side pickup from Sherwin-Williams for stains and materials.

I used a brush, roller, metal tray, spray pump and Sherwin-Williams Superdeck cleaner and stain to complete the project.

As with any painting project, the best results start with a clean, well-prepared surface. I started by cleaning and vacuuming everything off the deck. Then I scrub it really well, I use SuperDeck Revive Deck and Siding Brightener to clean and wash the deck. This formula is specifically for use on new or uncoated cedar, redwood, or treated wood.

I enlisted the help of this part of the project because you need to make sure you don’t let the product dry on the wood as you run. Working in small sections, Naomi and I wet the area and applied Superdeck Revive with a pump sprayer.

After applying, she uses a poly-bristled brush to scrub the area. Then we let it stay for about 10 minutes and rinse with a high pressure hose.

Once we got the groove, everything went really fast. After cleaning the entire deck, let it dry overnight. The next morning the wood looks fresh and new and revitalized…like new again!
