Don’t you have tons to spare? no problem! “I find that when things are open and you have nice junk bins, it makes it less cluttered,” Gaines said in an HGTV video.
Don’t stick to just one type of storage – choose wire baskets, clear bottles and glass containers. “The more reserves you have, the better,” he added.

Love the clean lines of your open floor plan, but not happy with your basement as a room? Personalize the space by defining separate areas with unique layouts. “The easiest way to do this is with lighting fixtures and local blinds,” Gaines says. When you do that, “when you enter [a] space, you have two distinct areas.”
Although it may seem that installing wallpaper in a small space can limit the space, the opposite is true. “Smaller spaces like bathrooms, mudrooms and entryways are great for trying out bold designs because they’re limited in terms of the amount of space you’re selling,” Gaines writes on her Magnolia blog.
This is especially true when you’re working to create another space within an existing room, such as turning the space under a dormer into a play area. “Hanging a favorite print or pattern in a small space, such as a desk or reading area, can fill the space in a way that helps it stand out in a larger room,” Gaines says.
If your space feels small and cramped, choose high or low lighting – or both! “The biggest thing I find in small spaces is that there’s not enough lighting, so I always encourage people to say, ‘If you have the space in the budget, add more lighting. Do,’” Gaines says. “Light makes things look. Bigger.”

“The fun thing about making things and how you store things is that things that might not be pretty, like cotton balls and Q-tips, you can put them in pretty glass jars and put them in a basket. You can make it beautiful by wearing it,” says Gaines. Hang the basket on the wall, and voila! Tons of storage and base space without sacrificing upstairs space.
While storage may be important for wire blocks in the living room, the same type of wood furniture can make a beautiful accent for any room, no matter the design.
“You can change the concept of these boxes—keep the concept the same, but change it whether you use reclaimed wood [or] wood,” Gaines says. “Over time, you can add, remove, [or] modify to meet your evolving needs”.
Even if you don’t have the time—or the budget—to find a place to start a flower shop, you can impress your guests with simple or expensive flowers in glass vases or small jars.

“As the seasons change, you can still use the same forward thinking” to go green on your table, Gaines says. “For example, at Christmas you can find carvings of Christmas trees.”
“When I do open shelving, one trick I like to use is to use a grid that goes around,” Gaines says. So if you have a green jar in the upper right corner of the top shelf, place an object in a similar color below it to create a cohesive look. “It’s a simple trick I use in all buildings; it’s a way to change things.”
Instead of filling your walls with pictures and paintings, choose rich materials, such as plush carpets, beautiful curtains and soft, inviting rugs. “Country living tells Country Living that more than anything else on the walls, let the room complete because you want to feel like you walk into your room and escape,” Gaines tells Country Living.
Do you have an unused door that could use a refresh? Adding a seat armrest adds visual interest without giving it a boxy look. “It adds character to the space and makes it feel warm and inviting when you walk in,” Gaines says. “The walls aren’t flat … I think they’re pulling on the walls, but you have space for art.”

If you have some money for decorating but aren’t committed to a clean house, don’t paint.
“Pick a color you like and incorporate it into your space using books,” Gaines wrote on her Magnolia blog. Add similarly colored books to your bookshelf or simply place them neatly on the table for a pop of color that won’t overwhelm the room.
