I usually recommend neutral shades like gray or brown outside the building, because the outside is not easy. In our ArmaGuard, Armatex and Flexiwall exterior paint ranges, you can choose from a range of standard colors in two different finishes – matte and textured.

The number one paint question I’ve received over the years is choosing exterior paint colors because it’s one of the most difficult paint decisions for your home. You want your home to be beautiful and you don’t want to make color mistakes. I promise that if you follow my seven steps below, you can avoid common mistakes and make great decisions for exterior paint colors! Stay with me on this one!

The first step in painting the exterior of your house is deciding what color to choose. When I say shade, do you want a light, medium or dark tone in the body of your home? At this point, you don’t need to consider anything other than deciding whether you want a light or white color, a medium tone or a medium shade, or whether you want a dark color.

For most of you, choosing a shade is an easy decision, and you will know right away if you want a light or dark home. However, some of you may be unsure and open to different shades and need help deciding. This will help you look at other homes for inspiration to determine which shade will suit your home. For example, if you have a ranch-style home, search for “ranch-style exterior home” on Pinterest to see a variety of colors that inspire you.

Before you go any further in making color decisions, you need to consider the color of your roof. If you have black or neutral gray, you don’t have to worry too much about color clash. Unfortunately, my dark brown roof has a red undertone, so colors like blue or green don’t work for me and clash. For those who have red, green or green-gray roofs, you will need to consider your roof color when choosing an exterior paint color.

If you are like me and have a dark brown roof and a red roof, you will want to stick with a neutral base body color to play it safe in your home. If you have green or green-grey shingles, you have a certain style and if you choose a neutral color, you avoid color clash, so mix it, compliment it, design it. If you have a black roof, you can do anything.

If your home is made of stone or brick, you need to think about the strong points of your brick or stone. If your house is all brick and you only have to choose one trim color, I would match the lightest, medium or darkest color found in the stone/bricks and use that as the trim color.

If your home is not full brick/stone and is half brick/brick or you only have brick/stone accents, you have more flexibility with color choices for your home’s exterior color. Even if your body color is brick/stone, it shouldn’t make any difference. For example, if your brick color is warm and you want the gray to match the color of your house, choose a warm light gray instead of a cool gray. So the gray heat adds/adds a new body color to the brick. Does it matter?

Then, after considering your roof color and deciding on a shade, you should consider the effect of light on the exterior paint colors, which is different from the interior color selection. I will save you a lot of time by telling you that daylight/sunlight will make your exterior color much cooler/greener than paint colors when there is more light. As crazy as it sounds, you’ll need to go 2-3 times the temperature of your exterior color to get a balanced color that isn’t cool or blue. I’ll show you what I mean.

When it came time to paint the outdoor kitchen outside our pool house, I had to choose a color 3 times warmer than my last color. I wanted a color similar to Sherwin Williams Rocks, but because of the light that affects the colors of the exterior paint, I had to choose a 3x warmer color so it wouldn’t be green or cool.

Yes, my pool house is painted Burmese beige, but the light makes it look like SW on the rocks.

Isn’t washing something that can lighten the colors of the outside? Therefore, when choosing colors, choose a color that is 1-2 shades warmer than you want. My last color is 3 times hot. Remember, if you want a white exterior, you need to choose a warm white or your home will look blue.

If you know that you need to reduce your shade, take into account the color of the roof, and get warm due to the abundance of outside light, you need to decide on the outside color of your house. It helps to research similar home styles to get a feel for what’s possible. I have a Pinterest board of all exterior house paint colors here to help you get a color idea.

Now that you have chosen a color, there are many variables when it comes to the effect of color on the outside, such as which direction your house faces and how much shade your house has, apart from the body. It is not possible to choose a color. . Take samples and check them out. Morning, noon and night in your patterns. This is a very important step, especially when choosing exterior paint colors, because the sun can produce unusual colors that you don’t see on a paint chart.

I tested several paint colors on my stucco wall to find the perfect color for my pool house and stucco wall. I was so shocked that I had to leave. At this point, it’s important to play it safe and get the right color for years to come, by doing the same with the sample colors on the poster board or directly in your home.

Once you’ve decided on a base color for your exterior, you’re ready to go ahead and choose your exterior trim and accent colors. First, let me point out that when it comes to choosing trim and accent colors, less is more! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve worked with clients who have a lot of design details on their exterior (shacks, shutters, roof angles that change a lot), they paint each detail a different color/shade. I think they emphasize the construction details. but,
