Today we’re exploring the darker side of things with Sherwin Williams’ most popular charcoal paint. But before we get started, we need to talk a little (as usual).
Warm grays can have purple or green undertones, while cool grays can have blue, purple, or green undertones (usually a mixture). I recommend reading if you want to know more.

And while those undertones are often muted on the lighter side of things, when we hit the dark side, they’re not hidden either. That said, if you’re one of those people who wants to see as little tone as possible, there are often less “neutral” viewing options.

Remember that you can’t completely avoid undertones, so you have to choose the one that suits your home decor best!
BTW, you will find that all of these colors have an LRV of less than 30. Not sure what an LRV is? It can save the life of your paint – read all about it here.
With LRV 26, the pigeon’s tail is no longer dark gray, but it still has nice meat on its legs (or the tail feathers may be more pointed).
Dovetail has passive heat and it’s hard to see it glow like a traditional cool gray. There are many fine points which you can read in its full color review.
How To Pick The Best Gray Paint Colors For A Nursery
If you ask me, do you think a color called “Classic French Grey” should be purple? Or does it create some weird emotional connection to my childhood? However, Sherwin Williams Classic French Gray has a subtle green undertone (with a slight wink to green-blue in certain lighting). However, it is so neutral that I consider it one of the most neutral dark greys, as all grays actually have an undertone.

Give me some grizzle for the shizen! Sorry, just channeling my inner bug. Grizzle Gray has an LRV of 13, meaning he has beefy flesh on his bones, but never looks black. If you ask me, Benjamin Moore Amherst Gray is known for its green undertones, but Grizzle Gray puts it to shame with a greener and slightly cooler attitude.
I’m throwing down the gauntlet with this gray one. But despite its LRV of 17, Gauntlet Gray isn’t the darkest charcoal, but it has depth.

When it comes down to it, Westchester Gray’s subtle approach is hard to beat. It’s not exactly neutral, but it’s not as pronounced as the other dark colors on this page.
The sun will fade this photo a bit, but I appreciate the photos my electronic design clients send me!
Although Westchester Gray looks a little blue-green, it is productive and best, and with the right exposure, interior lighting and environment, it can shift slightly to other cooler colors.

If you choose pepper, you get a very colorful ride. It’s not invincible by any means, just unpredictable. Like the top color in the fan deck, Grizzle Gray has a peppery green undertone. But with the right conditions, don’t be surprised if fall green turns bluish purple!

Pepper has an LRV of 10, so it has depth, more so than many colors on this page. But it’s not so dark that you can’t blink at the dark end of things. As I receive more photos from my electronic design clients showing this color I will add them. Until…
I love Web Grey. Its 13 LRV is a great way to add impact to a kitchen island, door or feature wall, but it’s not so dark that it weighs it down. And as for the undertones, it’s pretty cheesy!
The Best Sherwin Williams Gray Paint Colors In 2021
Web Gray loves blue, no doubt about it. But depending on the conditions, it can be blue-violet or blue-green. For example, layer it in a strong purple like Sherwin Williams Wall Street and you’ll really see the green pop out there. But then if you put it next to a gray-green color, it looks blue-purple again. Comparison is key.
