Grays are timeless (no matter what you see in the trend reports) and are popular with fans of calm neutral palettes, and I’ve previously blogged about designers’ favorite grays here.

Today, however, we’re going to narrow our focus to a hard-to-achieve chalky blue-gray. If it’s cool and blue, the color increases the risk of a blue baby, and if it’s too warm, it can read muddy green or warm.

Blue was the homeowner’s favorite color at the Southeast Designer Showhouse 2017 (above), and I’m a big fan of how the color is repeated in sophisticated and timeless interiors.

When I think of a beautiful, soft, cool, light gray blue paint, two of my favorite homes come to mind, first, Brook and Steve Giannetti’s Patina Farm.

They paint metal framed doors and windows in a custom color such as Farrow & Ball’s Pavilion Grey.

While many other modern farmhouse designs feature a bold black painted steel look, this was a cool color for interiors decorated in cool tones.

Second, Desiree Ashworth’s unforgettable French country house with Gustavian design details and soft blue-gray decor has a unique and special atmosphere.

So let’s start with a nice chalky blue like the custom color used in Patina Farm.

“This old gray house was created for a personalized space, but it reminds us of the Swedish color of the 18th century. One of the more neutral buildings, the blue shades of Pavilion Gray add a touch of modernity and spaciousness.

“Using a subtle combination of blue, green and black, Blue Gray creates quiet rooms that look like they’ve been there for a long time. It’s a cooler, more weathered version of French gray and has an almost magical quality of shifting slightly between green and gray depending on the light and time of day.

Last time we talked about the bedroom, I revealed our new ceiling wallpaper. This wallpaper was the starting point for this entire room. With the paper there, I can start thinking everywhere. To me, the wallpaper looked bold with creams, golds and blues, but because it was above the ceiling, surrounded by a sea of white paint on the ceiling, it got a little lost. I knew a fresh coat of gray paint on the walls was the way to make this backdrop really shine!

Benjamin Moore Just Released The Most Sophisticated Paint Color Of The Year

First, a new blue-gray color must be chosen for the walls and ceiling. We had a lot of snow here in Chicago (it’s been a crazy winter!) and we had a huge snowstorm the day I wanted to get the paint samples. However, I didn’t let that stop me! I put on my snow gear and went to my local Benjamin Moore store. Luckily, it’s only a few blocks away!

I brought in a background swatch to get a blue sky gray color to go with it. Often when trying to find a paint color to match a particular cabinet color, swatch, or other design element, I can match a paint store color swatch. They put it under the scanner and boom… you got your match! But because the blue color on this wallpaper was so small, they couldn’t scan to match perfectly. (Note: I later talked to Erin, the wallpaper designer, and she told me that the blue color was actually Benjamin Moore, “Blue Springs.” Oh, and I had already painted the room. But if you want to match it in the future, now you know!)

So my gameplan was to look at the swatches and find a warm toned blue. I didn’t want it to read too purple, I didn’t want it to read too cold. Instead, my main goal was a light gray green with some warmth! I looked at the samples and brought home four paint samples to try on the walls.

I always like to paint my swatches directly on the wall and place them in several places around the room. I know some people paint boards or sample sheets and move them around the room, but I like to see the color on the walls. I’ve never had a problem painting over swatches and seeing the actual color underneath, which I excel at. The same happened with this project. I did not sand or use swatches for this project. I drew it.

Absolutely Perfect Paint Colors Designers Love

After looking at the swatches on the wall, I decided Benjamin Moore “Boothbay Grey” was perfect for me. Not too purple, not too grey, just a hint of warmth. Yes Yes Yes!

Remember this recent blog post about common painting mistakes? I talked about how people often neglect to think about gloss when choosing their paint. Since I knew I was going to paint the ceiling and walls, I decided to go with two different shades of the same color.

For the ceiling I went with matte because our ceiling has some imperfections and I knew a glossy sheen would make it stand out more. For the walls I went with white because I like the light on the walls and it lasts a long time. (Note: I also went with the best paint that BM carries, which is their Aura line. The products are less expensive than actual paint per gallon for walls and ceilings).

I talked to a guy at a paint store and asked him the best way to work with two different cheeses of the same color. He said he would paint the ceiling first (two coats) and it would be ok if that matte went over the walls. Then he told me to cut the shell off the ceiling and paint the walls normally. That’s exactly what I did.

Before I started painting, I prepared the room. Finn and I removed the old mattress and box springs. I took the headboard and bed frame apart. I cleaned all the dust hiding behind the furniture.

My Dyson vacuum cleaner with a small attachment was the perfect companion for removing all the dust from the furniture panels. Nice to clean the place! Once the dust settled, I removed the vents and gaps and put masking tape on the windows and doors.

Then, it’s finally time to paint.
