For best results when printing your artwork, start with the CMYK color mode. This will help your images and background colors look good from the start. Of course, you can create your artwork in RGB, but then you need to convert it to CMYK.
While most colors transfer perfectly from one color mode to another, subtle gradations often appear when converting from RGB to CMYK (and vice versa), requiring manual adjustments to correct everything.

Other examples of this include how many software programs will translate a 100% blue RGB value to a CMYK color as more purple than blue. If you start with RGB color mode and later switch to CMYK, such changes must be taken into account.

Before diving into the technical guide, it’s important to understand why your files are in CMYK format. When preparing your files for a printing project, the color mode of all files is something you should always keep in mind. This applies to your latest images, graphics and PDF files. Your product should be designed in CMYK color mode whenever possible.

Color printing is also called four-color printing, full-color printing, process printing, and CMYK printing. Four-color printing involves separating all colors into 4 different color values (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black).
CMYK printing is an additive color process that uses ink or toner. RGB is a luminance-based subtractive color process. When you add layers of physical color ink to each other, they blend together. When you mix layers of colored light together, they blend together completely differently. For example, in the image below, you can see that when all the RGB colors are added to the middle of the RGB chart, white is created. When all CMYK colors are mixed together, they produce a key (black).
When RGB files are converted to CMYK for printing on a four-color printer, color shift often occurs. Usually these changes are minor, but they can be a problem, especially if your project is color sensitive. Also, if you upload a CMYK image to the web, you can see the gradation (example below).
When you save your images and graphics from the web, don’t forget to convert it to CMYK (and make sure it’s high enough resolution, but we’ll save that for another day). This is because the CMYK scale, or rather, its color profile, is smaller than the RGB scale. Gamut refers to the maximum range of colors for a color space. RGB has a larger color gamut than CMYK, so there is a color shift when converting from RGB to CMYK.

I know, I know, there’s more information than you’ve registered and now you’re probably thinking, “yeah, that’s great, but how do I convert from RGB to CMYK?” For your convenience, I’ve put together some tips on how to do this right in the design software our clients use most often.
InDesign is the best software to use when designing for print because it’s design for print by default. This means that when you create a new document, the project must be set to CMYK. Not only is it the default, but you can’t change it in a new document window. To create a new document, go to File > New > Document and fill in the rest of the project details.
Before saving the PDF, download and install the color profile and Adobe PDF Preset here. Instructions are included in the download. Once you’ve done that, go to File > Adobe PDF Preset > Save the PDF. This will ensure that your PDF comes with the specified G7 certified ICC profile, which does the most to maintain color accuracy.

For programs such as Publisher, Word, and Canva, you cannot save the document as CMYK. Your PDF must be converted from RGB to CMYK. If you use one of these programs and color is an issue, we recommend ordering a paper test for your project.
