To answer that, we spoke to some of our favorite designers for their top tips and tricks to help you navigate all your dark paint questions.

The trick for Caroline Grant and Dolores Suarez of Dekar Design is to make sure you don’t overload the entire room down to the furniture. “This may sound counterintuitive, but if you paint a room a dark color and then put light furniture in it, it makes the eye think that the room is not only bigger, but also has more natural light,” say Grant and Suarez. As for those deep, dark, “We’re big fans of Benjamin Moore’s Blueberries when you’re looking for a true, deep blue,” they say.

For a fresh dark look, Alexander Doherty Design recommends using “dirty” colors. It’s a color with a touch of gray or black added to it, making it more muted and less crisp and clean. Extra bonus? “Using a mix of red, gray, and blue allows the artwork to bounce off the walls,” says Doherty.

If you want to make a real statement, consider bringing color to more than just the walls, says Kevin Dumais of Dumais. “In this lobby, the walls, ceilings and custom millwork are painted the same color, Farrow & Ball’s Hague Blue,” he says. “It gives the room a cohesive look that makes it look like natural sunlight.” Especially for those with limited wall space, says Dumais continuing the same color on the trim, doors and ceiling adds a bold impression.

Dark paint can make the fifth wall a focal point. “Choose a color that is subtly represented in the other materials used in the room,” says Dumais. “In this living room, we chose ox’s blood red against the backdrop of the rug to unite the floor and ceiling.”

Crystal Sinclair of Crystal Sinclair Designs says that an already dark and small room is ideal for playing with dark colors. “Play with natural light in the room,” she says. “If it’s hidden, with little or no light, lean it in a darker color,” he says. Deep tones also work well in intimate spaces – such as bedrooms, dens and powder bathrooms – because they add ambiance. Or try them in see-through rooms, such as entrances, hallways, and restrooms.

Contrasting dark and dramatic walls, says Sinclair, “When using darker colors, make sure there’s something to balance it out, a lighter floor or ceiling, bright artwork, or even a mirror.” Adrienne loves architecture, design, cats, science fiction and watching Star Trek. Angie Theater’s Midtown East Studio Apartment in Manhattan is simply amazing. If you’re headed to the windier side of the spectrum, a teal like Clare’s aptly named Headspace will encourage you to chill out. “Looks great with other soft neutrals,” says Gibbons. On the other hand, navy graphite can be just as relaxing if you need it to be very dark while you sleep. The key to the atmosphere is contrast. In her Melbourne bedroom, designer Simone Haag painted the walls very dark, but contrasted with the white of the ceiling.

Save the fuchsia and wild berries for the small pieces of furniture and choose a dusty purple for the four walls. When creating a bedroom, Chloe Redmond Warner, Design director of Redmond Aldrich, suggests covering even decor with the same color, using a matte finish (this prevents the colors from looking too cakey). For a more traditional tone, choose a pastel purple. “Purple looks great paired with crisp white fabrics or royal purple accents,” says Woelfel.
