I used to have a basement, but that was dry and could be finished. I had never had a garage before and it was perfect. A modern eighteen-by-eighteen-foot one-car garage, with the same cedar planks as the house, has provided enough space for dozens of home improvement projects over the past two decades.
I will call it a garage. The word “garage” was coined by the French in 1902 as “car storage”. I don’t have a car in my garage, but if I want to put a baseball bat out front and tuck my mobile desk in the corner, our Prius fits easily.

After the war, the construction boom changed. Built in 1947 in Levittown, New York, the house was purchased for $7,000 with a loan from the Veterans Administration. It also came with an attached garage because the houses were built on small lots to keep costs down.
More than half of the houses built in 1950 had no garages or garages. In 1999, only 12% of housing construction was built without parking spaces.

Many homes are built with three-car garages, but the extra space can easily be converted to other uses, especially where homes don’t have basements.
The price range determines the size and flexibility of such locations. The ideal location for a two car garage is now on the side of the house and not visible from the street. Whether buyers can afford it or not depends on their affordability.
Passage garages work best in corners. It enlarges the house and is generally considered attractive by the community.
Although a two-car garage is standard, many upscale buyers want a three-car garage. However, with two-car garages becoming a standard feature in townships that used to have single-car garages, there is still the challenge of having enough space to store and maintain one car.

Some builders have left the two-car garage in front of the house, but designed it as a separate building. These garages often have flex space over the bays and are designed to look like old carriage houses rather than garages, appealing to homebuyers’ desire for tradition in design, construction and decoration.
In other parts of the country, flexible space is standard in garage space, especially if a third garage is involved. In Texas, where homes are built on concrete slabs, this flexible space is called the “Texas Basement.”
There is a downside to selling older homes without garages, especially in urban areas where on-street parking can be dangerous. Insurance rates are lower for homeowners who can keep their cars on the street and in the garage.

Cars get bigger every year, and 10-foot-wide garages are too small. Some new homes even have smaller garages than they should.
