Convert Hex Color Code To Pantone – The report uses HEX numbers to identify colors. Here’s a quick guide to best practices in using and changing HEX colors.
HEX, short for hexadecimal, is actually a six-digit code that tells the computer the RGB number it needs to display a color. There are over 16 million possible colors that can be expressed using this system.
Convert Hex Color Code To Pantone
Your computer screen uses RGB colors (RGB red light, blue light and green light) in specific combinations to create color. All these colors combine to produce 100% white.
The Why Of Viva Magenta
Your printer uses CMYK colors (CMYK cyan ink, magenta ink, yellow ink, and black ink) in specific combinations to create color. 100% of all these colors merge into black.
Colors often display differently from one monitor or device to another, and without sophisticated color calibration tools, the colors on your screen won’t necessarily match the colors on your printer. The same is true when you send something for professional printing or production.
Systems like Pantone solve this problem: if everyone has the same print chip, we can be sure that we’re all seeing the same color. There are many other systems used around the world and across industries, such as RAL (for powder coating), HKS (used in Europe) and DIC (used in Japan). Color chips from companies such as Benjamin Moore, Sherwin Williams and Farrow & Ball are also used to determine the color.
No matter what software you use, there may be a window where you type in (or search for) the color code.
Guide To Using Pantone Colors And The Pantone Matching System
HEX colors are commonly used in software graphic design building modules such as Canva, Mailchimp, Squarespace, etc. HEX numbers can be copied and pasted into the spaces provided in each program to achieve color consistency between programs and platforms.
Update 11/1/21: Pantone recently put this tool behind a paywall. I find the Pantone Connect annual subscription a must, I’m quite happy with the old fashioned way of getting this service for free!
You can search for Pantone colors and see their HEX values (as well as CMYK and RGB).
Because colors look different on screen and from one printed shelf (or product) to another, it’s important to use the HEX color conversion as a starting point. Pull out a Pantone chip or order a color swatch to check the color IRL, preferably in several different lighting conditions. If you use HEX colors in your artwork, print a proof from your computer and see if it looks the way you want it to. (You can use your proof along with Pantone colors to determine the color for your manufacturer, or you can create a color palette to match the manufacturer). Adjustments are usually required!

My Epson printer is not professionally calibrated, so what the customer sees on the screen or what the manufacturer prints from my file will look different than my proof. My solution is to develop and print a plate for each of my clients/projects and submit printed proofs to the client for approval; The same proof applies to matching producers. This allows me to have a set of colors that I can use from one model to another and ensure consistency. (Adobe Libraries make it easy to share these colors between applications, design files, and team members.)
My workflow sometimes involves using Pantones (especially if the client or manufacturer requests them), but I find the palette quite limited. And for weaving, I work from yarn stock provided by the mill or send solid color fabric swatches to match.
Getting the product color right is very important and all designers have tips and tricks to achieve the best results. I think this idea, along with the Pantone color palette, was originally intended to help designers determine and manage colors for projects that will be released as prints. The proposed color system is very useful for this, as it allows you to specify colors that normally cannot be mixed based on CMYK.
But today the digital world merges with the physical world more than ever, and many of our projects cross that fine line. Printing Pantone colors accurately is just as important as displaying digital copies. However, finding matching Pantone colors can be difficult when you only have HEX color codes for reference. For your convenience, we have created this compatible tool specially designed to perform the previous functions. On this page you can easily translate HEX colors to some common Pantone charts using the input form below.
