Existing homeowners have limited their wood finishes (roof, brick and stone). The product (brochure) builder usually gives you options that are formatted so they don’t conflict with each other, but there are still some pitfalls.

Before we share some of our favorite exterior paint color schemes, let’s make sure we’re all on the same page about the different parts of new construction exteriors and exterior finishes for homes.
The guidelines for new buildings are the same as for existing homes. The difference is that for new buildings, you should choose roofs and hard finishes like stone or brick. For existing homes, you are already limited to the roof and stone or brick.
Start searching Pinterest for exterior paint color palettes and find homes in the neighborhood with color palettes you like. Keep it simple. With most items, you can choose a collision combination. If you have samples, look at them together in natural daylight.

When choosing exterior paint colors, you can’t forget about the actual exterior of your home: the neighborhood, the floor, and the ambient light! Make sure your color choices coordinate with your neighbors. Do not repeat their colors and try to stick to the idea of neighborhood.
It’s important to remember that paint colors look four to five times brighter and more colorful outside than they do inside or on the page. One of the most common mistakes homeowners make is choosing a paint that is too bright or too bright once it is applied to the exterior.
How the paint looks on the outside depends on where you live. For example, heavily wooded areas with lots of green trees will reflect a lot of green light into the house, accentuating the green tones that were already in the paint.
The strength of the sun in your area will also affect it. A homeowner living in Florida will experience brighter sun than someone living in New York, and a bright color or white can look overwhelming. High-elevation areas—like Colorado, where The Color Concierge is located—can experience the same problem.

For new construction, first choose a roof and stone or brick. Mark your choices with a busy end. For example, choose only one stone, even if the price includes two. Choose stone or brick, but not both. You don’t like to pick up a brick or a stone. Just because it’s included doesn’t mean you have to use it. If your stone is busy, choose a single color roof.
The key is to keep decorative finishes like stone and brick fairly simple. This will make it easier to choose exterior brick and paint color combinations.
Exterior Paint Color Combinations To Try
One of the best ways to create a cohesive exterior paint color scheme is to match the color to one of the colors of your chosen stone.
Since brick and stone are earthy finishes, you’ll want to choose earthy colors like warm whites and beiges. For example, a color like Benjamin Moore’s Manchester Tan is one exterior paint color that goes with red brick.
Another trick to creating exterior brick and paint color combinations is to match the color of the grout in the brick or stone to the color of the body of the house.
For red brick, stucco is usually gray with green undertones. Finding a similar color to use on the body of the home creates a truly cohesive exterior color palette.
Paint Colors That Compliment Red Brick House
Colors like Fawn Brindle by Sherwin-Williams or Rockport Gray by Benjamin Moore are good examples of green-toned grays that are not too bright for outdoor applications.

As we saw earlier in this post, whether you’re choosing a new exterior finish for construction or updating an existing home, there are several parts of your home’s exterior that will require painting. Every exterior needs its own attention when choosing paint colors.
Generally, you’ll want to limit paint colors to one trim, door color, base body color, and maybe a second body color. If you choose a secondary color for the structure, use a different material to highlight architectural features such as gables or for the body such as shingles.
Red Brick House Design Updates With Photos
A large percentage of homes have white vinyl windows. If this applies to your home, it is recommended that you paint the trim around them white. With a bright color, the frame disappears into the decoration. Dark window trim with white vinyl trim will stand out from the white vinyl and look cheap.
But don’t try to match the white of your windows. Remember – lighter colors look brighter outside, so choose a slightly darker white to create a seamless transition between the windows and brick, stone or siding.
For exterior whites, I prefer darker, warmer whites like Sherwin-Williams Oyster White and Zurich White. In Benjamin Moore exterior paint colors, Classic Gray or Edgecombe Gray serve as trim colors. If your inclination is a little lighter, you can opt for Willa Sherwin-Williams Greek Coffee or Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee.
Many Benjamin Moore bloggers recommend dove white or alabaster white as trim colors. We usually don’t like this because white dove can be bright outside and alabaster can turn yellow. This is another reason to check paint colors very carefully.
Paint Colors For Your White Brick House
If you have black windows, be careful when choosing the color of the window coverings. Black textured paint can look very heavy. Instead, consider white trim or use the exterior body color as your window trim. Another option is body color paint.
The trim should usually (though not always) be the same color as the trim or windows. Use a black roof to create a modern farmhouse look, especially with white siding. A dark brown roof goes well with dark, earthy siding colors and rustic palettes.

We really love white roofs, especially since many homes have white vinyl siding. Be sure to choose a white that is warmer than you think. If you paint too dark a white, it will be blindingly opaque. Basically, if your house is white inside, it will be very bright outside.
Our Favorite Green Exterior House Colors
If possible, paint the eaves and porch ceiling the same color as the fascia for a cohesive look. The colors of the white seats and front porch help brighten the interior by reflecting the light inside. Colors painted near windows can reflect this color indoors and affect the appearance of the interior color.
If you have a black belt, think carefully about whether you want to paint the hood black or body color. I really like the blackboard/roof combo, but it can be difficult if the foundations are too wide.
