I was hoping I could do it that way, but with the special products we use and our loose material that just doesn’t work. Should You Paint Inside Bathroom Cabinets? (tips & Ideas)
Derek and I are no strangers to painting cabinets. We earned it, paid someone else to do it, sprayed it ourselves and painted it twice by hand. In fact, my preferred method so far is to paint it by hand.
We paid professionals to paint our kitchen cabinets in Georgia and they started chipping the same week. When we bought our last house before this new one, we used spray paint on our cabinets, but it gave them a weird build up that can happen if you’re not a spray paint expert and know exactly how to put it together. .
We have done this hand painting method twice now and both times have had consistent results, no chips and it has held up perfectly!
To paint the bathroom cabinets, you will tape all the walls. Open the doors and drawers, sand everything, wipe it with a cloth, and then paint it with 2-3 coats of your favorite satin paint. Once everything is dry, you reassemble your plate and you’re done! This is a simple project and after doing this project twice the results are perfect for us.
How To Refinish Bathroom Cabinets
We are using Behr Marquee Satin Enamel (color matched to Benjamin Moore Hale Navy) paint from Home Depot for both bathrooms in our house right now. It’s a paint and primer, so we didn’t prime the cabinets in this project, so it saved that step. The finish looks great in the bathroom and is easy to clean without being too shiny like a semi-gloss paint. This paint was recommended to me by someone else who used it and loved it, and although we have three months of wear on the paint as of this writing, I can say that we haven’t had any chips or issues! I’ll be sure to come back and update it over time, but we’re very happy with how it turned out!
To paint the bathroom cabinets, you first need to tape your baseboard off the floor, walls and the counter above it. This will ensure that you get nice crisp lines and you don’t end up with paint you don’t want.
Once everything is attached, remove the doors and drawers and place all the included screws in a zip lock bag. That way, you’ll have it when you need to put it all back together later.
With that out of the way, you’re ready to start sanding. You will sand your doors, drawers and base cabinets with 220 grit sandpaper. This is enough to remove the old finish from the cabinet and give the new paint something to hold on to.

After you have sanded everything well, you will take a cloth to wipe everything down. The tack cloth is a super sticky cloth and will pick up and wipe off all the sanding chips so they don’t ruin your paint.
Then take your garage doors and drawers and place them on painters easels. This will lift them off the floor when you paint, but won’t mark your door or drawer paint. You will need four artist tripods for each door/drawer so that everything has a stable surface while you work.
Now you are ready to paint! I used a two-inch angled brush to get into the detailed borders of the cabinet doors and where the roller was too big to reach. After brushing everything with my angled brush, I use a 4-inch foam paint roller for the rest. Always start from behind your closet doors and drawers so that the last coat you finish is at the front.
What I find works best is to start empty, then go out to the garage to paint the doors and drawers, then back in to repaint the plates, and back in the garage to turn and paint the doors and drawers. Very different side. It just helps keep things moving and so I don’t have to wash the brushes a million times between coats.
How To Paint A Bathroom Vanity
Always paint in thin coats to ensure a smooth finish and allow about an hour to dry between coats before starting your next coat. I never sand between coats, but if you have lines and feel like you need to, sand between coats. Just know that I did not and I do not regret this decision.
When everything has three coats of paint and enough drying time and your doors, drawers and dishes are not sticky to the touch, repack your loose items. After painting the loose items, we often glue the felt pads to the furniture
