I’ve created three simple steps to help you create a color palette that’s gender neutral enough for a boy or a girl – or both/as the case may be!
Of The Most Versatile And Dependable Paint Colors {all Star List}
Obviously, the best place to start is choosing your main wall color, however, I recommend choosing the main furniture color before you get too deep.
There is no shortage of beautiful colors for a gender neutral playroom or nursery, remember that neutral whites can make great base colors, making it easy to add a wide variety of accent colors!
Owl Gray is a soft, light gray with subtle blue/green undertones. Read about it here: Gray Owl Color Review.
Edgecombe Gray is a beautiful shade of gray that is balanced between gray and beige. You can reduce it by 25% or 50% for a smoother approach.
Readers’ Favorite Paint Colors {color Palette Monday}
Gray cashmere is a soft light blend of gray, blue and green. Although the gray owl’s main color is gray, you’ll find that the gray of this color takes a bit of a back seat, as the blue and green changes depending on the exposure of the room.
Feeling brave? Chelsea Gray is a beautiful mid-tone charcoal that can ground a room, whether it’s a feature wall or any wall.
White Dove is a beautiful, soft, warm white color that is a great choice for a room facing north or south (or east/west).
When it comes to light, cool grays, Big Chill is a great choice. If you want a bit more depth/undertone, you can also check out Benjamin Moore Stonington Grey.
Our Calming Whole House Paint Color Scheme
Featherbed is a nice, slightly strong yellow, which is great if you have northern or eastern light, as the yellow is slightly better than the soft cream range.
Similar colors to check: Sherwin Williams Cream, Benjamin Moore White Down (these are more muted creams)
Your neutral accent colors can come naturally to your room through the furniture you choose, so keep that in mind!
Don’t take these accent colors too literally (that’s why they don’t have names next to them). These are your jumping off points for inspiration!
Benjamin Moore Van Deusen Blue
You can choose more than three, I don’t choose three different colors. I add variety by using the same color with different DEPTHS (it’s too busy otherwise).
Not all of the neutrals above will match all of the colors in step 1, as this will depend on your wall color. Generally black, gray and white go with any color in step 1, it’s a bit harder to mix brown/cream/tan.
You don’t need to choose a neutral accent color (although white is usually required). If you prefer a more colorful approach, skip to step 3!
I love a good neutral palette, nothing like a splash of color to add personality to a room! And there are many more wild and wonderful colors than the ones I’ve shown below (ie: brown and orange) that should get you going!
