Finding a GM VIN is very easy. It is shown in the vehicle passport, insurance card and vehicle registration. You can also find them in several places in your car, including:
Your vehicle may not have a VIN in all of these locations. The easiest way to see the sticker is on the side of the driver’s door. Sometimes the sticker is damaged or worn. If you can’t read the sticker, look through the windshield at the top of the dashboard on the driver’s side of the car. You will find a small metal plate. The VIN is stamped on this plate.
The first three letters will tell you who made your car. This character set is called the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI). The first letter represents the country where the manufacturer is located. The second and third letters will tell you who the manufacturer is.
GMC VIN numbers always start with 1 or 3, which means the vehicle was made in the US (1) or Mexico (3). The next two numbers depend on your make and model. For example, if you have a GMC truck, the WMI in your VIN will read 1GT. If you have a Cadillac, the WMI on your VIN will read 1G6.

The eight characters after WMI are called the Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS). This section lists your vehicle’s features, such as:
Some drivers are hesitant to give out their VIN for fear of the information being stolen. If you have similar concerns, make sure it’s safe to give out your VIN. No one can extract any sensitive information from it and use it to steal your car. Your vehicle’s VIN is public information. After all, it’s on your dashboard.
It is also common practice to provide the VIN when selling a car. By doing so, you help potential buyers learn about your car’s history. They can also find specific information about your vehicle from the VIN, such as trim level. A: V8 models In addition to the series and model identifying letters, models equipped with a V8 engine from the factory will have a “V” in front of the series and model identifier. The original model equipped with a 6-cylinder engine did not have the “V” at the beginning of the VIN. Code Series Model A 1500 150 Model B 2100 210 Model C 2400 Bel Air Model C: Year of Manufacture First set of digits in V.I.N. the sequence represents the model year of the vehicle. “55” stands for 1955, “56” stands for 1956, and “57” stands for 1957. D: The meeting point of the V.I.N. represents the place of assembly where the vehicle is manufactured. Between 1955 and 1957, ten major assembly plants produced passenger cars. Oakland, California uses an “O” factory code that can sometimes cause confusion with serial numbers, especially on 1955-56 models where the sequence starts at zero. A: Model Year Code Like the VIN, these two digits represent the year the vehicle was manufactured. “55” means 1955, “56” means 1956, and “57” means 1957. A detailed list can be found below. Note: There are up to two letters after the four numbers. The first “D” indicates a Bel Air series model, and an “F” anywhere indicates a station wagon model. From 1956 to 1957, the letter was sometimes followed by a three-digit code. “A” will represent a single paint color, while “B”, “C”, “D” or “E” will represent a two-tone paint scheme.
