Before starting your brick paint removal project, we always recommend testing an area first. The best place is usually somewhere inconspicuous, such as the farthest corner hidden from view. Cleaning is the most enjoyable part of a DIY project for most people, but you can help yourself by taking the time to prepare the space in which you will be working. If you’re removing paint from an interior brick wall, you’ll at least want to use a tarp to collect dust, paint chips, small debris, etc., that will fall off during the process. Additionally, a tarp or protective plastic can provide an additional layer of protection for flooring, trim, etc. in the work area. Finally, covering doors and vents in the room can help keep dust in one place.
For all home DIY projects, we recommend protective clothing. For this paint removal project, we recommend a minimum of safety goggles, gloves, respirator, long sleeve shirt, and pants. If you use a paint stripper, make sure you also wear the protective clothing recommended by the manufacturer.
Top tip: If you can see the exposed brick in these areas, you can use a heat gun to remove the paint. Heat guns are not only a more economical solution, they will also be less messy.
In a clean bucket, mix one gallon of warm water with one-half cup of trisodium phosphate (TSP) in a 2:1 ratio. Using a long whisk, mix the solution until all the TSP has dissolved. Using a stiff brush, apply the CTA solution and scrub the brick. Once you have applied the TSP to each area where you want to remove paint, let the TSP solution sit and cure for about 10 minutes. After the time is up, scrub the brick again with the same stiff brush. Continue this process (step five) until all the paint is removed from the brick.

If there is still paint on the brick, treat the area with paint remover or paint stripping gel. Then, moving the scrub brush back and forth, continue to scrub the brick to remove the paint that has settled deep into the brick pores. For particularly stubborn areas, use a scrub brush and scouring powder. Make sure the area is rinsed with water, then apply a scouring powder and rub vigorously to remove paint residue.
After removing all the paint from the brick, rinse the surface with plain warm water to remove any remaining TSP solution or paint stripping gel. Allow the brick to dry and look for areas that need to be cleaned a second time.
