This week I’m sharing how I experimented with painting furniture using the Benjamin Moore Advance. This is an alkyd paint that does not require a topcoat like most furniture paints. So I am really looking forward to using it!

I thought I’d give it a little sanding to remove surface scratches.
So I sanded first with 100 grit sandpaper and then with 150 grit sandpaper. Then I sanded it down with 220 grit sandpaper.

After the filler had dried, I washed the smooth drawers and washed the smooth surfaces as well. Read all about the importance of sanding furniture before painting in this post.
Dan took us to my spray booth and sprayed me with clear lacquer. I mostly used clear shellac so that the paint would stick to the surface without chipping. I removed everything first.
If you’ve seen my other videos besides the latest one, you’ve seen me talk about sanding scuffs and priming before painting.
However, I am now in the process of testing this clear lacquer to see if all the paints I use adhere and adhere well to this clear lacquer.

It is very easy to spray and unlike other spray primers that sting when sprayed, it does not require sanding after spraying.
Additionally, this clear lacquer helps prevent leaking issues. So I rely on this for almost anything. LOL Check out the best primers to stop tannin bleeding here.
So I sprayed both areas with two coats of clear shellac at night and let it dry for an hour after each coat.
Then it’s time to paint! I chose a satin gloss called Essex Green by Benjamin Moore.

Poured the paint into the paint sprayer. Then add about 20% water and mix the paint and water well.
Before spraying furniture, test the spray on several boxes to make sure the paint settings and thickness are correct.
Now that we’re spraying, let’s talk a little bit about this paint. That is, this paint is an alkyd paint, that is, a water-based paint.
This means that it can be cleaned with water, and water can be added, but after curing it will be more like a glossy or oil-based paint. That’s why I hear it’s very strong.

I’m happy that I don’t need a coat. This paint doesn’t really need to be layered. I’ve heard that brushing, rolling, or spraying gives great results.
One major drawback, however, is that the can states that he needs to dry for 16 hours between paintings.
It left some orange peel when I sprayed it on, but I’ve heard from other painters that it’s normal, so I wasn’t too concerned.

However, the gloss of the additionally purchased parts also looks dirty. So I went back to the drawing board and sanded down the surface to make it look like rough wood.
While polishing it, I have a lot of time to think about what I want to do now. It can be repainted or left as wood. What are you going to do now?

My Benjamin Moore Smoke Review
So, first apply a poly coat and let it dry. Then I applied two coats of bright lime with paint couture paint. And immediately remove it and put it back.
After a few minutes, I wiped the brown cloth again to remove some of the surface shine.
A few hours later, after the chalk had dried, I applied a few coats of water-based poly by hand.
You can also spray polyurethane with a paint sprayer, but this paint doesn’t require a topcoat, so I decided to play it safe and hand-apply the poly over the wood.
Advance Waterborne Alkyd Primer
I let each coat dry for a few hours between coats and gave it a fine sanding before the final coat.
I also lightly sanded the green paint to make sure it was smooth before applying another coat of paint.
And before I painted it again, I taped the surface so it wouldn’t be paintable. Learn more about how to prevent overspray when painting furniture.
Then I sprayed it with a second coat of paint. The next day I removed the plastic and started figuring out what hardware to use.

I’m happy that I don’t have to refuse. But in general it took longer in the dry season than with other paints.
I’ve heard that this dark alkyd paint takes a long time to cure…and it’s true.
