We love the idea of combining the fluidity of pouring paint with the intensity of traditional painting. AB Creative does it in a really fun and interesting way and explains their process step by step so you can try it yourself.
We love the different tools used in the pouring process (see below) and after the paint hits the canvas. Fiona’s art used the back of plastic spatulas to create the beautiful texture and texture in the piece above. It shows that even a quality tool can create interesting results.

Pour Painting (or Acrylic Pouring) is a fun art technique that involves mixing acrylic paint with thinner and pouring it onto the canvas. The canvas is then lowered to allow the paint to flow, mix and create a fluid design. Pouring painting has become popular in the last five years, but my first attempt at it was a huge failure. I couldn’t find a good beginner’s guide, so I couldn’t tell which many plugins are necessary and which to skip. I just tried to think for myself and the result was not good.
But starting a new art or craft is much easier when you have someone to show you the way! My mom came to visit last year after spending months learning how to paint and she shared all her best tips with us. My kids and I quickly fell in love with watercolor painting and the beautiful art you can create with them. So I put together this beginner’s guide to casting. This way you can try it out without investing a lot of time and money before you find out if you like it. A good warning though, it’s a lot of fun if you get hooked after your first project!
Every paint spill is different and you never know exactly how it will turn out – and that’s half the fun. As with any new art or craft, it may take a few tries to find an image you really like. Fortunately, you can pick up canvas very cheaply at most art stores so you can play around and practice.

There are many things that can be used for throwing, which can be difficult. This is my absolute must-have list.
Acrylic paint and pour-in OR pre-poured paint: You can use inexpensive acrylic paint for pour-in, but the colors MUST be thinned before pouring so that they flow easily onto the canvas. Paint can be thinned with Flood Floetrol, which you can find on Amazon, or you can buy Pouring Medium at a craft store to thin the paint. For each paint pour you will need 4-5 different colors that you think will look cool together. You have several options for purchasing paint and consumables:
Canvas or other casting surface: You can paint plaster on many surfaces, but an art canvas is the easiest. Look for multi-packs of canvas at your local craft store – you can get 5 or 6 for several bucks. You can also buy 8×10 flat canvases at the dollar store or Walmart (for a dollar each) to practice on. Flat sailboards tend to warp a bit as they dry, so they’re only good for practice.

Small disposable cups: You will need several small cups (2-3 oz) to mix paint and Floetrol *unless* you buy pre-mixed paint.
Pouring cup: You will need a plastic cup about 8 oz in size to pour the paint. If you get the Amazon package linked above, it comes with a clear pouring cup with measurements marked on it, which is very convenient, but not necessary. You can use any type of disposable cup for pouring.
Something to protect your surface: I use large sheets of freezer paper on the table under the spray paint. You can use cheap plastic tablecloths or large plastic bags. If you are making this with kids and are worried it will get too messy, you can get large foil pans to pour them into.
Kitchen torch: Although not necessary, a kitchen torch is used after pouring to remove paint bubbles and reveal more detail. I ordered this from Amazon. Note that you will also need to buy butane for the kitchen light, which you can often find near the lighter in the grocery store. If you don’t want to buy a lamp, you can try using a lamp with a long nose.
Commonly Asked Pouring Paint Questions
Inexpensive cooling rack or large pegs: You’ll want to hold the canvas up on the table as it dries. I usually place it on top of four small plastic cups, but you can use an affordable cool set or large nails pushed into the back of the canvas in each corner.
Foam Brush: I like to put a base of white paint on my canvas before applying because I think it helps the paint go more easily, but it’s not necessary.
Collect all your tools and protect your desktop. Then choose 4-5 colors that you think will look cool together.
If your paint is not pre-mixed, you will now need to mix it with Floetrol until it is thin enough to pour. You want the color to be about the consistency of warm honey or chocolate syrup, so that when you rub a little on the stirring stick, it will go on in a continuous way, but not as thin as water.
Acrylic Pouring Techniques!
The amount of paint in Floetrol depends on the type of acrylic paint you are using. Cheaper paints are thinner to begin with, so they won’t need as much Floetrol. Fine acrylic paints, like the ones that come in the Amazon kit, are very thick to begin with, so you’ll use very little paint and a lot of Floetrol. To start, mix small numbers; you can always add more though
