The number one paint question I get over the years is about choosing exterior paint colors because it is one of the most difficult painting decisions you can make for your home. You want your home to have great curb appeal and you don’t want to make color mistakes. If you follow my seven steps below, I promise you will avoid common mistakes and make exterior paint color decisions that turn out great! Stay with me on this one!

When deciding what color to paint the exterior of your home, the first thing you need to do is choose a color shade. When I say “hue”, I mean do you want a light, medium tone or dark color in the body of your home? At this point, you don’t have to think about anything other than deciding whether you want a light or white color, a medium tone or a medium shade, or whether you want a dark color.

For most of you, choosing a shade is an easy decision right away and you can immediately tell if you want a light or dark colored home. However, some of you are indecisive and open to any nuance and need help making that decision. It will help if you search Pinterest for exterior inspiration to determine which shade will look best for your home. For example, if you have a ranch style home, search for “ranch style home exterior” on Pinterest to see all the different color options that will inspire you.

Before you get too far into your color decision, you need to consider the color of your roof. If you have black or neutral gray, you don’t have to worry too much about clashing colors. Unfortunately, I have dark gray undertones with bright red undertones, so colors like green or blue don’t go well with me and clash. For those of you who have red, tan, green, or blue-gray roofs, you’ll want to consider the color of the roof when choosing a color palette for your exterior paint.

If you’re like me and have a dark gray roof with red undertones, you’ll want to stick with a true neutral main body color just to be safe. If you have teeth with green or blue-gray shades, you have a little more freedom and avoid color clashes if you choose a neutral color or a color that will blend and complement your shingles rather than clash. If you have a black roof, you can do a lot.

If your home has stone or brick, you’ll also need to consider any strong hues found in your brick or stone. If your house is all brick and you only need to choose one trim color, I would go with the lightest, mid tone, or darkest color found in the stone/brick and use that as the trim color.

If your home is not full brick/stone and is either half stone/brick or only has brick/stone accents, you have a lot of wiggle room with color options for the exterior body color of your home. As long as your body color has a slight hint of brick/stone, you shouldn’t have any problems with contrast. For example, if your brick color is warm and you want the body color of your house to be gray, choose a light warm gray instead of a cool gray. So the warmth of the gray will add/mix the new body color into the brick. Does that make sense?

Then, once you’ve considered the roof color and decided on a shade, you need to consider the effect of light on exterior paint colors, which is different from choosing interior colors. I’ll save you a lot of time by explaining what happens to paint colors when daylight/sunlight makes your exterior look bigger/bluer. As crazy as it sounds, you need to go at least 2-3 times warmer on your exterior color to get a balanced color that won’t be cool or blue. Let me show you what I mean.

When it came time to paint the exterior of our pool kitchen, I had to choose a color that was actually 3 times warmer than what I wanted in my favorite finish color. I wanted the final color to look like Sherwin Williams “On the Rocks”, but due to the abundance of light affecting the exterior paint colors, I had to choose 3x warmer colors to neutralize the blue or cool color.

Yes, my pool house was painted Burmese beige, but the lighting makes it look SW on the rocks.

Isn’t it crazy what light does to exterior colors? So when choosing colors, sample colors that are at least 1-2 warmer than the color you end up liking. My final color was 3 times warmer. Keep in mind, if you want a white exterior, you must also choose a warm white or your home will have a blue cast.
