I followed the program instructions for each and then took the test board outside to withstand the hot sun, rain and wind before further testing. When I started researching deck paints, I found so many conflicting ads and reviews that I decided to try the most popular brands. I wanted to determine the overall quality of each, so I started by purchasing a white board and cutting it into 12-inch test boards.

I labeled the test board and applied the deck color with the exception of one color that was for the pools. I recorded how much paint was mixed directly into the can and how much I had to stir (if at all). I also noticed how evenly each color applied to the surface of the test board.
I added a second coat of each color to make sure it had the best chance of sticking and forming a durable surface. Then, a few weeks after painting, I tested the painted surface by rubbing it with a white cloth to see if there was any discoloration. Then I checked how smooth the surface was.
When I draw, I use a rubric and get bonus points for how well each does on each test. At the end of the test, I totaled the points and used them to help determine the awards for each product.

The color was gray and it didn’t take more than a few minutes to mix the color with the wood. Eager to test this claim, I painted one of the deck’s test boards. It goes on evenly with a brush. I set it aside to dry and added a second coat 16 hours later.

The next day, I put the painted test board outside to sit in the elements for 2 weeks. After that, I tested it for friction and non-slip properties. I sprayed water on the board and ran it again – not slippery at all. Then, I wiped the wet surface with a clean white cloth to see if any color came off. No, the cloth is still white.
TotalBoat can be applied with a brush or roller, and one to two coats are recommended, although I’ve found that one coat provides really good coverage. One gallon covers up to 300 feet. I really like this color, but it’s not cheap. To keep costs down when painting the entire deck, I only use it on the deck. I would choose a cheaper exterior enamel for the fence because it doesn’t require a non-slip surface.

Because it settled during shipping, I had to stir the paint for about 8 minutes to mix it well. I used a brush and applied one coat to my test board. It goes on evenly and covers well. I saw a good texture and put it aside to dry.

After 8 hours (minimum recommended waiting time), I applied a second coat and brushed it on perpendicular to the first, as per the directions on the label. I can see some potential benefits to brushing a second coat – it might stick better than when brushed in the same direction. This was my first time doing this technique, but I will keep it in mind for future painting projects. Plus, INSL-X is made by Benjamin Moore, one of the most respected paint manufacturers in the country, and I usually trust their advice.
Once the paint was dry, I tested the INSL-X anti-slip texture by wetting and dragging my finger across the wet surface – the texture didn’t slip easily. I tested the washing power by spraying a board with water and rubbing it with a clean white cloth. None of the colors came off on my fabric, so that’s a plus. Only time will tell how durable the deck paint can withstand months of UV light and the elements, but my initial impression of INSL-X is that it offers a durable, non-slip surface at an attractive price.
In the past, I wasn’t a big fan of eco-friendly paints: they either didn’t protect well or didn’t hold up against the elements. I’m happy to say that signing montage made me rethink my opinion. This is the first eco-friendly paint I’ve used that resists mold, mildew and UV rays. But an important note: it should only be used on deck railings or built-in benches, not on the deck floor, as they are not designed to withstand foot traffic.
This water-based paint is low VOC and free of toxic fumes, but still has an unpleasant and downright disgusting smell. However, I mostly apply this paint in the shop to the deck boards. If I were to paint the actual deck railings, I’d be outside, so the smell wouldn’t be as noticeable. The best I can compare the smell to is rotting leaves. Fortunately, there is no lingering smell after the paint dries.

Montage Signature is suitable for use on indoor and outdoor fences and railings. It is available in semi-gloss or low-gloss finishes and in 18 shades of gray and khaki. I chose the light gray with low sheen and was impressed with the color and finish. I applied a second coat after the recommended 4 hour wait.
As with the other colors I tested, I tested the assembly signature after the deck boards had been outside for 2 weeks. I splashed water and wiped hard with my cloth. Without loose paint, one gallon of this eco-friendly paint can cover up to 300 square feet. With this product, cleaning is done with soap and water.
