Benjamin Moore Gray Paint With Blue Undertone – Last time we talked about the bedroom, I revealed our new wallpapered ceiling. This wallpaper is really the starting point for the rest of this room. With the paper there, I can begin to visualize the rest of the space. To me the wallpaper looks bold with cream, gold and blue, but as it’s on the ceiling, surrounded by a sea of white ceiling paint, it’s a bit lost. I know a new blue gray paint color on the walls is the way to go to make that wallpaper shine!
First, I had to choose a new blue gray paint color for the walls and ceiling. We have a lot of snow here in Chicago (it’s been a crazy winter!) But, I’m not letting that stop me! I put on my snow gear and walked to our local Benjamin Moore store. Luckily, it’s only a few blocks away!

I brought the wallpaper swatch to find a blue gray paint color that would complement it. Usually, when I’m looking for a paint color to match a specific cabinet color, swatch, or other design element, I can match the swatch at the paint store. They put it under a scanner and boom… you have your ink combination! But because the blue in this wallpaper was so small, they couldn’t scan it to find a perfect match. (Note: I later talked to the wallpaper designer, Erin, and she told me that the blue color was Benjamin Moore, “Blue Springs.” The future, you know!)

So my game plan was to look at the swatches and find light blue colors with warm undertones. I don’t want it to be purple and I don’t want it to be too cold. Instead, a light blue gray with some warmth is my ultimate goal! I looked at the samples and took four paint samples home to try on the walls.
I always like to paint my swatches directly on the wall and place them in different areas of the room. I know some people who paint pictures or swatch sheets and move them around the room, but I really like to see the color on the walls. I have no problem painting the swatches and seeing the original color underneath, so this works best for me. This is the case of this project. I did not sand or prime the swatch colors on this project. I just painted them.
After seeing the wall swatches, I decided that Benjamin Moore “Boothbay Grey” was for me. Less purple, less gray and with less heat. Yes yes Yes!
Remember that recent blog post about common painting mistakes? I mentioned how people often forget to think about sparks when choosing their paint. Since I knew I would be painting the ceiling and walls, I decided to use two different glitters of the same color.

For the ceiling, I chose matte because our ceiling has some imperfections and I knew a brighter sheen would enhance it even more. For the walls, I used eggshells because I wanted some shine on the walls and they were durable. (Note: I also went with the prettiest paint BM carries, which is the Aura line. I think brands are less important than the actual paint. Go for the prettiest you can afford. In the end, I spent a gallon for on the walls and a gallon.for the ceiling).
I talked to the guy at the paint store and asked him what was the best way to work with two different glitters of the same color. He said he would paint the ceiling first (two coats) and that it would be fine if this matte overlapped the walls. So he told me to cut the eggshell on the ceiling and paint the walls as usual. So that’s exactly what I did.
Before I started painting, I prepared the room. Finn and I pulled out the old mattress and box springs; I took apart the headboard and bed frame; and cleaned all the dust bunnies hiding behind the furniture.
My Dyson vacuum cleaner, with a small attachment, is the perfect companion for removing all the dust from the plinths behind the furniture. The cleanliness of the place was great! After all the dust was gone, I removed the holes and vents and used masking tape around the windows and doors.

So, finally it’s time to paint. I followed the paint store clerk’s instructions…paint the ceiling first, then come down. I was too nervous to glue the wallpaper for fear of tearing or ruining it, so I cut the wallpaper slowly. It took a while, but it was worth it.
I find that using a roller extender really helps. I had to climb a ladder to cut the wallpaper. The rest of the ceiling and the upper part of the wall is done with a roller. This saved time, but this project still took me all day, alone. My mom took Rory to her cousin’s house that day and at 8am they left. When they came back at 5pm, I cleaned up. Too long! I ended up watching the whole season
Here’s a view of my back looking up at the ceiling like I’m lying in bed. It’s so cute, isn’t it?! I’m so glad I took this paint color to the edges of the wallpaper, because it’s now the main feature of this room. It stands out and adds a unique design element.
Before, I thought the black fan was too strong against all the white and cream. Now I think it looks great with the new blue gray ink color. It’s a nice contrast to the warm tones of the paint and wallpaper.

I took these photos in the morning after sunrise and I think they show the true color you see in this painting. It doesn’t look gray to me, instead it’s very blue and maybe a little green at times. I’m so glad I didn’t find purple in this shade!
The color changes a bit throughout the day like most, and I love it regardless of the light or time. Its color is very beautiful.
Again, here I am sitting in this room watching and I don’t get mad! This view never gets old and soon I will be laying in our new king bed looking at the new view here. I love that!
Now is the time to start giving up that space. The rug has arrived from Loloi (sneak peek above) and it’s beautiful. It has a lot of green tones and I think it complements the blue gray paint color very well.
