Benjamin Moore Grey Purple Undertones – This is what happened. The 90s were hazy beige. The particular “beige” has a yellow undertone and when mixed with other ’90s elements of shabby chic and faux finishes, it doesn’t look good. After that, we as a people are ready for a major shift, a rejection of warm and dated tone. So 2000 rolled around and we celebrated a new millennium by kicking off a decade (if not more) of “grey”. For whatever reason, we neutrally consider this more “modern”, “fresh” and “masculine” (this is also a decade that values ”masculine” and “feminine” differently – boo-bye).
In an effort to be more sophisticated, I started painting everything gray. I even wrote an entire post about it, with the odd mention of Ryan Gosling. I didn’t get many great photos back then, but I did find a few.
Benjamin Moore Grey Purple Undertones
For the pilot episode of Secrets From A Stylist, I chose this gray grass for Ian’s house (and the cheapest gray wall-to-wall carpet ever), and it’s cool in every way.
What Everyone Should Know About Grey
After the show, we switched to this warm camel color that we still love 10 years later.
Mixing it with hot pink (Woah, those roses – can you say ROMANCE?) and copper it looks great and believe me if it were white it would be very flat – that room has very little natural light (read how you made the big mistake here). If I could go back in time, I’d probably choose a powder blue paint for that plaster or a warmer, lighter gray.
But I wasn’t wrong. Ten years ago I painted the gray owl in Ian’s living room and I still love it.
So what makes one gray depressing and the other gray like a big hug? How do you choose the right gray paint?
A Shade Of Gray
A few years ago, Brady wrote an entire post about his “Choosing the Perfect Gray” journey, trying 12 different paint colors on swatches before painting his living room.
He chose Pavilion Gray (the same as Scott’s room) with the help of our listeners and the photos, it looks great.
She thought she had made the right choice… but after realizing it, she realized that her room was dark and depressing – even though it looked so beautiful in the photos. He painted it super white (and also moved the sofa and his “junk” chairs – his words – which were literally falling apart).
Now a good gray, like a good ALT, is always in style. This is not a statement, we are not announcing the death of one of our true neutrals. So what’s my problem?
Our Review Of Classic Gray By Benjamin Moore
It’s very easy to get “cold” and cold gray can feel depressing. When I was designing the house in Portland, one of the best pieces of advice I got from the locals was not to paint anything gray. It’s probably there. Same goes for the English who want brighter colors who can also be moody but aren’t
So, in conclusion, are we done with gray???? NO, but we definitely only use it where necessary and know it’s not for every room or place. It has become a place we visit. The ’00s ushered in a decade of white walls, and we both doubted that popularity. Both can be great neutrals and great wallpapers for any style, and we’ll always use and highlight our favorites. But as with anything, we are more objective and ask ourselves “WHY?” before choosing a color.
Those are my current thoughts and feelings about gray. I want to know yours (and recommend other shades of gray in the comments – I’ll just use the ones I use and we need more recommendations too).
WANT MORE WHERE DOES IT COME FROM? Never miss a post again and get that little bit extra on Saturday.

When it comes to the best DARK GRAY paint colors, it’s ALL in shades. Not only that, it’s all about MATCHING these undertones with your interior finish – whatever your personal preferences are. This means if your home likes a violet, blue, or green hue and you don’t, take a deep breath (and a glass.
For those of you hoping for the EVER INSTANT, perfectly neutral gray: I don’t want to photograph the paint screen, but gray has undertones. And not only gray paint colors, but also gray SURFACES. Does the gray tile look a bit neutral? Yes. Is your corner sofa perfectly jet black?

Even your new white quartz countertop with a gray vein – it has undertones too. Knowing the interior undertones will make it easier to choose the best paint color to go with it (if your room is a clean slate, focus more on the lighting of your room).
In terms of the colors you can expect, warm gray paint colors have violet or green hues, while cool gray paint colors lean toward BLUE, violet, or green (usually a combination).
Although the gray areas on the top wooden wall look ‘grey’, it has a certain violet hue, making Benjamin Moore Trout Gray a great choice!
Now, if you’re reading on the dark side, you may have come across my blog post on the best Sherwin Williams DARK GRAY paint colors, as well as Benjamin Moore’s best DARK greige and paint colors. The bold and taupe paint colors are hard to hit because the undertones often come through more than you’d like, leaving you with more than just “neutral” walls. As for gray paint colors, same thing. While it’s easier to get a fairly neutral look on the lighter side of things, these shades can get stronger the darker you go.
Of The Best Benjamin Moore Gray Paint Colors Ring’s End
But despite the undertones, compared to Sherwin Williams’ picks, Benjamin Moore kicks some serious badonka donk, so let’s get started.
By the way, you can see that ALL of these colors have LRVs less than 30. Not sure what the LRV is? It will save PAINT LOVIN’ LIFE – read all about it HERE.
Chelsea Gray has an LRV of 22, making it a popular choice for cabinets, exteriors, and even all the walls in a room! On the humble LRV, there’s just the right amount of depth to add drama and style to a room without weighing it down too much.
In the upper dining room, you can see how sharp Chelsea Gray looks with a white trim. You can get the same look with Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace with Chelsea Grey.
How To Pick The Perfect Gray Paint…. A Popular Color Choice Of The Moment
And although you sometimes don’t see it, Chelsea Gray has a green undertone. It’s also classified as a WARM gray, but you won’t find it traditionally warm like Metropolis (coming soon).
In this kitchen (below), Chelsea Gray looks simple and understated against the black laminate countertops, allowing the white subway tiles and cabinets to make all the difference…
In the opposite direction of Chelsea Gray (in terms of undertones) is Steel Wool. While Chelsea Gray has a green undertone and a hint of warmth, Steel Wool is a COOL gray paint color with a violet-blue undertone.
The beauty of steel wool is its flexibility, without nodding 100% commitment to the blue and violet end of things. And it does all this while looking more or less ‘gray’, as shown in the next photo of the entrance area…

The finish color pictured above is Benjamin Moore Cloud White, a white with a hint of warmth to offset the cool approach of steel wool.
Benjamin Moore Graystone has an LRV of almost 30, making it one of the BEST options on this site. As for this particular kind of warm gray, I’d like to show you something a little darker, but if we just ONE SMALL smack in the squirrel’s tail, we get a green that’s more distracting than a series of football games (not me, I swear ).
But compared to the slightly warmer, grittier end of things, Graystone holds its own
