Firstly, the undertones play a big role in how we perceive the color of the painting. We use undertones to talk about a color in contrast to other colors. So it’s either cooler/warmer than clean/muddy and something to compare.
Let me take an example. Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace is warmer than BM Pure White. In comparison, BM Pure White and Chantilly Lace are cooler than Simply White with yellow undertones. Benjamin Moore Pure White is the freshest of these whites and has a gray undertone.
