Best Blue Grey Paint Color Benjamin Moore – Last time we talked about the bedroom, I revealed our new wallpapered ceiling. This wallpaper really sets the tone for the rest of the room. With the paper on top, I can visualize the rest of the room. The wallpaper looked bold to me with creams, golds and blues, but because it was above the ceiling, surrounded by a sea of white ceiling paint, it got lost. I know the new blue gray color on the walls is one way to make this wallpaper pop!
First I had to choose a new blue-grey color for the walls and ceiling. We’ve had so much crazy snow here in Chicago (it’s been a crazy season!) and of course the day I wanted to get paint samples there was a big snowstorm. But I didn’t let this one down! I put on my snow gear and headed to our local Benjamin Moore store. Luckily, it’s only a few blocks away!

I took a wallpaper sample with me to find a blue-gray paint color. Usually, when I’m trying to find a paint color to match a cabinet color, color scheme, or other design element, I can get the paint store to match the sample. They just put it under the scanner and boom… you have your color! But because the blue color in this wallpaper is so small, they can’t scan it to find a match. (Note: I later spoke to the wallpaper designer, Erin, and she said the blue color was actually Benjamin Moore, “Blue Springs”. The future, now you know!)

So my game plan was to look at the swatches and find light blues with warm undertones. I don’t want it to be too purple and I don’t want it to read too cold. Instead, my end goal is a light blue gray with some warmth! I looked at the samples and brought home four paint samples to try on the walls.
I always like to paint my designs directly on the wall and place them in different places around the room. I know some people paint boards or swatches and move them around the room, but I really like seeing the colors on the walls. I’ve never had a problem painting a swatch and seeing the original color underneath, so that works best. Same with this project. I did not sand or prime the swatch colors for this project. I just painted them.
After seeing the color swatches on the wall, I decided that Benjamin Moore “Boothbay Grey” was for me. Not too purple, not too gray and with a bit of warmth. Yes Yes!
Remember this last blog post about common painting mistakes? I talked about how people often overlook gloss when choosing a color. Since I knew I was going to paint the ceiling and walls, I decided to use two different shades of the same color.

I used matte for the ceiling because our ceiling has some imperfections and I know that a glossier finish will only make them stand out more. I used shellac for the walls because I like the shine of the walls and it is durable. (Note: I also used the nicest paint BM has to offer, which is their Aura line. I think the brand is less of an issue than the actual paint. Go for the nicest you can afford. I ended up going through gallons of walls and gallons of ceiling. ) .
I chatted with the guy at the paint store and asked him what the best way to work with two different shades of the same color was. He said he would paint the ceiling first (two coats) and it would be good to apply the matte paint to the walls. Then he told me to cut the shiny shell off the ceiling and paint the walls properly. So that’s what I did.
I prepared my room before painting. Finn and I removed the old mattress and box spring; I disassembled the headboard and the bed frame; and I cleaned up all the dust bunnies hidden behind the furniture.
My Dyson vacuum cleaner with a small accessory is the perfect companion for removing dust from the plinths behind the furniture. It feels so good to clear the space! After all the dust was gone, I removed the holes and vents and used masking tape around the windows and doors.

Then it was finally time to paint. I followed the paint shop employee’s instructions…paint the ceiling first and come down. I was too nervous to glue the wallpaper because I was afraid it would rip or tear, so I slowly worked my way into the wallpaper. It takes time, but it’s worth it.
I find that using a roller extender really helps. I had to climb the stairs to cut through the wallpaper. The rest of the ceiling and the upper part of the wall are done with a cylinder. This saved us some time, but this project still took me all day, alone. My mom took Rory to her cousin’s that day and they left at 8am. When they came back at 5pm, I was cleaning. This takes a long time! I ended up watching the whole season
Here’s my back facing the ceiling, like I’m lying in bed. Isn’t it cool?! I’m so glad I took this color to the edge of the wallpaper because it really shows off this room now. It stands out and adds such a unique element to the design.
I used to feel that the black fan was too strong for all the whites and creams. Now I think it works well with the new blue-grey color. A nice contrast with the warm tones of the paint and wallpaper.

It’s time to start furnishing this room. The rug was from Loloi (see above) and is beautiful. It has a lot of green undertones and I think it complements the blue-grey paint color very well.
