Now, if you’re into everything, you can check out my blog posts on the best dark gray colors by Sherwin Williams and also the best dark gray and gray colors by Benjamin Moore. Grays and grays are difficult to deal with as the undertones often come through more than you would like, leaving you with only ‘neutral looking’ walls. Ditto for grays. While it’s easy to get a slightly neutral look on the lighter end of things as they darken, those undertones can increase with wear.

But whatever the tone, compared to Sherwin William, Benjamin Moore has seriously hit the bentoncandonk, so let’s get started.

Chelsea Gray has an LRV of 22, making it a popular choice for cabinetry, exteriors and walls in all rooms. With this medium LRV, it’s the perfect depth to add drama and style to a space without weighing it down.

In this kitchen (below), Chelsea gray looks simple and low-contrast with black laminate counters, allowing the white subway tile and cabinets to contrast…

Going in the opposite direction from Chelsea Gray (as it pertains to undertones) is steel wool. Where Chelsea Gray has green undertones and a slightly smoky warmth, Steel Wool is a cool gray with purple-blue undertones.

The great thing about steel wool is its versatility, nodding to both the blue and purple ends of things without 100% commitment. And it does all this while still looking a little too “grey” as seen in the next entry photo…

The trim color in the photo above is Benjamin Moore Cloud White, a white with a hint of warmth that offsets the cool approach of steel wool.

Benjamin Moore Greystone has an LRV of about 30, making it one of the lighter options on this page. As for this particular kind of warm gray, I’d rather show you something a little darker, but if we’re going to turn the squirrel’s tail down just one notch, we’ll go with green, which is more distracting than attention-grabbing. soccer jersey (I wasn’t, I swear).

But compared to the slightly warmer grizzly end of things, Greystone holds its own in terms of undertones perfectly. While it’s definitely a nod to Leela, it’s more of a polite gesture than a “come here.” In the photo above, you see a gray stone with a white dove and a trick heart door.

See how much greener the party looks in this front foyer with warm white trim and a sleek wooden front door. Remember that your room’s exposure, interior lighting, and surrounding finishes all play a big role in how color is perceived.

Dark charcoal with purple-blue undertones. I can’t even tell you how many times I mention this color to my online color consultant clients.

At around 10 LRV, it’s definitely one of the darker options out there; at least before things start looking black, that is, when everything is glowing. In the photo above, notice how the semi-gloss of the paint bounces off the light, making the gray look lighter than you’d expect.

In this next photo, while the wood paneling is in dire need of being painted the same color as the mantle, let’s notice how the gray catches the dark stone of the fireplace mantel…

Metropolis is light, one of the best warm grays on the market. Some warm grays lean so much that they are considered brown, others are so subtle that they don’t always have enough warmth. Metropolis is right in the middle and is a great choice for some granite countertops, especially from the early 2000s.

Amherst Gray is a very popular dark gray color second only to Chelsea Grey. At LRV 17, Amherst Gray has a little more meat on its bones without being as dark (but beautiful) as waxy charcoal.

But remember, there are always cozy shades, and Amherst Gray is warm with green undertones that can be significantly off depending on the surroundings…

I love MAD for Trout Gray because it’s a gray that’s colorful enough to be interesting without being overwhelming in its approach. For undertones, the trout gray leans nicely into the blue. A blue that leans into a rough violet, as seen in this powder room with personality.

Trout Gray has an LRV of around 15, making it a VERY stylish choice for walls, fittings, cupboards or an entire room.

The Best Paint Colors For Gray Trim

While the above options are the most common dark gray paint colors, this next section is about a more neutral dark gray. Why aren’t they included above? Well, it’s rarely used, and that’s because most interior design calls for gray colors with obvious undertones. That’s not to say these options aren’t beautiful.

I don’t even have full reviews of these colors or photos to show you because I don’t mention them often, which means this is an extremely short recap…

The asphalt has an LRV of 19.71 and a very light purple hue. This makes it an interesting choice for a roofed, stone or brick exterior that requires a more passive approach. It’s also an interesting cabinet color when very few undertones are needed.

In the case of LRV 13.47, the coat takes a similar approach to asphalt, with a slightly more intense purple hue and a bit more FLESH to the bones. The coat would be a beautiful choice for outdoors as well as front doors and walls.

The Dolphin has an LRV of 22.52, making it the lightest of the latter three. It also has slight undertones, maybe a tiny hint of green. The danger with this color is that if your finish has purple undertones, the dolphin can look relatively flat or even a little green. Not sure if this is possible? Take a sample of Benjamin Moore’s Metropolis and place it next to a dolphin and watch the magic unfold before your eyes. Well, maybe it is
