When it comes to painting your brick, you have several options. Traditionally, lime – a mixture of old, burnt lime and distilled water – was used to whiten brick or stone.
You can find premix white brick paint that cuts down to just a few steps and allows you to get started quickly. However, for best results, we recommend using a DIY receipt.

Making your own whitewash with a mixture of flat, water-based paint (latex paint) and water allows you to control the opacity of your whitewash and achieve the desired finish.
When used properly, bleach can last 20 to 30 years or more with little maintenance. Limestone has a long life span—think 70 years or more—and needs a touch-up every 5 to 7 years.
Painting and white brick are similar processes, but some key differences set them apart. For example, if you want the opaque look of painted brick, you don’t need to dilute the paint with water or wash the surface. Instead, apply the paint with your brush, making sure to fill in any gaps, cracks, or crevices to smooth them out.
Whitening, on the other hand, allows you to preserve the texture and depth of the brick floor, while turning off unwanted red or brown tones. You will see hints of color under the thin layer of paint, but your brick will have a bright, white facade.

Also known as German smear or mortar wash, the German smear process uses tin to apply mortar to bricks. Then, you can spread the wet mortar wash onto the brick using a sponge, trowel or hand (be sure to wear gloves to avoid any cuts or scratches!).
Unlike whitewash or limewash, German stucco is harder and more opaque because it uses a solution instead of latex paint to coat your brick. With that in mind, we don’t recommend whitewashing if you want the color and texture of your brick to show through.
However, if you’ve always dreamed of living in a cozy European country house, German plaster is a hassle-free way to capture the beauty without spending a lot of time and money on renovations.
There is no need to seal your whitewashed brick. This means that sealing the paintwork will protect it from scratches and damage, meaning less maintenance time in the future.

Now it’s time to color your receipt. I usually do my bleaching by making a simple mixture of 50% latex paint and 50% water. If you search the internet for “how to paint white” you’ll find all kinds of recipes, from acid to brick fireplace lime washing (yes, real lime!). ! This method worked on two of our fireplaces, so I’m sure it will work.
Dip your brush into 1/3 of the paint mixture and gently rub it against the side of the bowl, letting it dry before using. I work in 1 x 1 foot sections to better control the paint balance. It’s best to go low because the paint drips (stay away from the nasty paint!).
Once you’ve completed the first section from top to bottom, work your way up until you’ve completed the first coat. It is important to get between the bricks to get more paint from the mortar, otherwise the white brick will be incomplete.

Impressive Spaces With Whitewashed Brick Walls
In construction, whitewashing is the process of lightening the color of ceramic units, such as brick or stucco, by applying white paint or primer to them. It can be used to brighten up or give a new look to brick walls. Bleaching is recommended to hide brick stains or discoloration and to protect the brick from moisture and insects.
In exterior applications, the whitewash process helps protect the brick from water damage and weathering. The paint or primer used in white brick exterior paint contains high levels of titanium dioxide, which reflects UV rays and provides protection against fading.
On interior walls where moisture is not a problem, a low gloss or matte paint can be used instead of whitewash primer.
Most latex paints are suitable for white interior brickwork
