Most garage slabs receive only a small amount of sealant when they are first installed. So years of storage and loss take a toll. The natural porosity and chalkiness of the stone make it impossible to clean. Epoxy flooring is not only an easy weekend DIY, but also a great way to keep your workspace inviting and clean for years to come.

Check for moisture problems. If your slab is the first one without a vapor barrier or you have high water pressure, it is possible that water vapor will lift the slab off the surface. Tape 2′ x 2′ of clear plastic over the slab and leave for 24 hours. If you see dark spots or droplets forming, seek advice from your epoxy supplier in installing vapor barriers.
Before you begin make sure the air temperature is 60 degrees and above and your slab is below 50 degrees. It’s nearly impossible to get the epoxy to set if you try to do it in the winter.
Use a toothbrush to clean the slab. Remember to stay against the wall and around the station door.
Remove stubborn dirt or oil. For stubborn areas, apply a full strength degreaser and continue scrubbing the surface.

Quickly remove standing water with a bubble putty knife. The goal is not to get the floor wet so it dries quickly.
Mix the citric acid cement etchant with warm water according to the instructions. Then apply, scrub and wring out the floor just like degreaser. The citric acid will help open the pores in the concrete so the epoxy will work better.
Check if the sealant is from top to bottom. Pour water on the slab. If the water rises to the top, there is a seal that can affect the adhesion of the poxy. Depending on the amount of sealant left, the etching process may need to be repeated.
Place (1) part A to (2) part B on a clean sheet and then fill the cracks and voids using a plastic knife.

Your epoxy supplies should come with a large and small can. The big B may look light, but it’s filled just a little bit, so you can pour part A into it. Epoxy resin comes in many colors, but the two most popular are gray and tan.

Depending on the temperature, let the epoxy cure for the time recommended on the package. Don’t lie at this stage or you’ll have a smooth paste.
Pour the epoxy mixture into the roller tray and use a soft brush to trim the edges. Don’t go too far before rolling because you want to keep the epoxy wet until the flakes are applied.
Begin spreading the epoxy in 4′ x 4′ sections. Keeping the edges wet, gently lay the edges of the edges into the wet epoxy. Also, remember to plan your outing because the ground needs to be dry for 24 hours before traffic is clear. You don’t want to paint yourself into a corner!
In general, put heavier epoxy than necessary and save the flakes. Epoxy sinks into the concrete and loses its shine if not applied heavily enough.

Try to spread the flakes as high and thin as possible for unusual light. The bows not only add a beautiful pattern to the top, but also add some imperfections to the bottom.

If your concrete floor collects moisture, it can seep under the finish and you won’t have a good seal. Remove some clear plastic feet and place it on the floor. Use duct tape or other types of tape to seal both sides. I recommend leaving it for a day or two and periodically checking for moisture, discoloration, or condensation on the floor or under the plastic wrap.
If that fails, I’ll get a professional to find out where it’s coming from and what to do about it.
Finding a place to store everything in the garage can be very difficult. This will take a few days, so I recommend you do it all at once. Our bench was built into the wall so we left it outside.
