Bricks covered with dirt and soil are easy to maintain. Simply wash the bricks with a mixture of water and liquid detergent and use a fiber or soft mesh brush to scrub them.
Make a cleaning solution by mixing equal parts of water and bleach and spray this on the affected parts of the brick. Then use a natural or nylon brush to remove the mold or moss.

Set the water pressure between 1000 and 1200 psi, keep the water spray about 500 mm from the wall (and never closer than 300 mm to get areas), and the spray angle at 15 degrees (this will allow you to concentrate the pressure on the bricks rather than joints).
It is very important to fill the entire area of the masonry and the area under it with water before and after using the cleaning solution. Priming the wall before you start will keep the solution on the surface of the brickwork where the stains are found. It is also very important that the area is thoroughly saturated afterwards as any remaining cleaner can cause staining.
When cleaning, you should aim to treat between 2 and 6 square meters at a time, depending on the weather, the brick and how quickly your bricks absorb water.
First, remove all debris such as ash or wood chips from the grill surface. Remove as much soot as possible from the area with a vacuum cleaner or brush.

Then prepare the cleaning solution. Smoke and soot marks are best removed with sugar soap, which is a highly alkaline solution. Mix 500 grams of sugar soap in 2 liters of warm water, and clean the area with a scrub brush. After doing this, rub the surface of the brick with a mixture of detergent and scouring powder.
It is very important to stay safe when removing smoke and soot from the outdoors. You should always wear proper eye protection to prevent loose lance or spray from getting into your eyes.
This is an iron oxide stain. It is most visible on cream bricks, but can also appear on dark bricks. Iron oxide stains are often caused by improper use of hydrochloric acid in clay molding.
You can remove iron oxide stains with phosphoric acid (check with your local hardware store). Spray a mixture of 1 part phosphoric acid and 6 parts water on the affected area. Let it dry until the marks are gone. Repeat to make sure all stubborn stains are removed.
