How To Remove Brick Fireplace – A year ago our family room looked like this! When we moved in 14 years ago, the humble living room was covered in wallpaper from the 1980s. Unfortunately, the wallpaper was first applied directly to the drywall (without painting it first)… whw! The collapse was a nightmare and because of this the walls were in a terrible state.
At that time, we didn’t have more money to repair it the way we wanted, so it was in this situation for a long time. I’m not a huge fan of brick and wood stoves, especially since we have 3 other fireplaces in the house. I don’t think the stove in my house is what I want, it makes it difficult to arrange the furniture in the room. I want to exclude him … but my husband is not completely into the idea. So the room was like this.

This past Memorial Day weekend, we abruptly canceled some plans to stay open that weekend…which rarely happens. My husband said, “We can take the oven you don’t like!” We were wondering what to do. what ! Oh—Aww! I quickly snapped these before the photos on my phone and we immediately started tearing down the room. I’m so glad!

We will start by removing all the crown molding, chair rail molding, baseboards, and the bottom wall. We remove them carefully so that we can use the crown molding and the base plate again.
Then we took out the wood stove and after a few days it was available for sale in the rooms.
The house is well built and the bricks cost a lot to break. It’s nice to have a well made house… but furnishing is another story 🙂 All kids want to be a part of it. It was a lot of fun hitting the walls with a sledgehammer!
It took several days to completely demolish the wall. But we did. Then we have to remove all the bricks and clean the area, so we can add drywall to match the existing walls.

We also need to install bricks on the ground floor. There are hardwood floors on both ends of this room. We discussed getting the same type of flooring to match everything in this room, but the center wanted a family room with carpet for comfort, so we chose and replaced it with carpet.
After our contractor friend helped us properly drain the chimney, we added a little insulation to the wall before covering it with drywall.
The walls were so bad that we decided to cover them and add some lap boards to give them a new and clean finish. i love it! I will share how we got on in the next post! It’s a very simple process, but it takes some time to complete…especially with kids and family.

If you’ve been paying attention for a while, you’ve probably heard me talk about our two-sided fires a time or two. If not, here’s a picture of what our oven looks like, it’s double sided so you have the same view from the dining room. Twice the fun, right? Error!

Suffice it to say, we all love to have a fireplace. That being said, we have a few questions about your current situation. Fortunately, we can fix it with a little effort.
Removing Fireplace’s Brick Facade Not So Hard
Honestly, what can you wear with a mantle next to the oven? If I show something there, no one will see it because there is no line of sight from the living room or the kitchen. Basically we knew it had to start from day one!
Removing it was a can of worms and like most of us we were a little apprehensive about opening it but it was actually a lot easier than I thought but now you had yourself a big messy bun.
Now, before you start hammering your mantle with a mallet, it’s important to understand exactly what happens after you start hammering the bricks. So don’t go all Incredible Hulk just yet.
Important note: usually, you need to add bricks when removing to keep the structure of the oven. You definitely don’t want to take out an entire row of bricks if it’s going to support the rest of the fireplace. The mantle next to us was not like this, so we were able to remove it all without affecting the chimney structure. After reaching the front, we need to strengthen the area and then replace the bricks. When you remove the brick, you leave a hole that needs to be fixed.

FYI, this is one of the hardest tasks I’ve ever done, but it was pretty easy to clean, although a few weeks later I’m still getting bricks in the oddest places.
After the brick is removed, there will be a big hole, and it will never leave! Our plan is to paint the brick white and add two reclaimed wood panels on each side.
So instead of completely removing the brick mantle in front of the fireplace, we decided to make a reclaimed wood shell that would fit perfectly over the existing mantle, but that’s a different article for another day. I’ll be sure to post all of our travel throughout the process to keep everyone up to date. We really couldn’t be more pleased with the lack of an eyesore in the middle of the main living room.
