While it can be tempting to rush—or skip—the prep process, if you really want the end result to look good and last, prep is the most important step. And the techniques you use and the products you use can make or break your results. Follow these steps and you’ll be on your way to a flawless finish.

The wooden cabinets were in good condition, but the dark surface was old and the space felt small and dreary.

Start by installing a floor protector, then cover the ceilings to serve as work surfaces. You can use mesh, but I personally prefer construction paper as it protects well, is cheap and easy to throw away/recycle.

Yes, some say I go a little crazy preparing, but I know from experience that it’s not a waste of time. Remove all doors and drawers, carefully label/number them (you’ll thank yourself later) and put them away for cleaning. Seal the inside of all cabinets with plastic and tape to keep out dust, cover all splash areas with plastic, and seal all equipment to keep it clean.

Go to the cleaning process. Remove any food residue from the cabinet and wash/wipe with synthetic steel wool and soap and water. For heavy duty work, use TSP (trisodium phosphate) and water; TSP actually agitates grease and removes it more effectively than soap alone. Allow to dry completely before proceeding.

This is the main preparation step: SVT (Sand, Vac and Tech). Sand the cabinets with medium-grit sandpaper and/or 180-grit sandpaper using a random orbital sander. No need to remove it

To finish, but should be sanded down to give it “tooth” and promote adhesion. After 100% of the surface is sanded, use a brush vacuum to remove most of the dust. The last step is to remove the remaining dust. The foundation is very simple: apply it as evenly as possible and be very thorough. Application can be done by brush, roller or sprayer. For this project, I’ll show you how to apply it with a brush and roller. The best brushes for painting cabinets have super fine nylon bristles. Thus, the surface remains almost free of brush marks. Don’t skimp on this. A good brush costs between $15 and $25. Properly cleaned, it will serve for decades. When choosing a roller for painting cabinets, I prefer a very high quality woven cover. This prevents thread separation and a defective surface. I like ¼” or ⅜” for naps. Anything thicker leaves a lot of stains.

After the primer dries, I like to repeat the SVT process: lightly sand, sand the glue and remove any small blemishes left in the plywood, then vacuum and re-glue before removing the cracks. I prefer to do the gaps (where the cabinets meet the walls, crown molding, etc.) after the primer. Sealer always adheres better to paved surfaces than to bare wood. However, never attach panels to cabinet doors – these are actually called “floating panels” and must move due to seasonal fluctuations in temperature and humidity. I have seen some very bad effects from freezing these panels, such as breaking the seal and even cracking the doors. It’s tempting to grab this one, but you should stay away from it – trust me on this. Allow the pumpkins to dry completely before proceeding.

Now that you have a completely filled surface, it’s time for the top coat. Application techniques are similar to foundation – use a brush and/or roller with high-quality nylon bristles and take your time to ensure smooth, even coverage. Start by covering the back sides of the door and stretch them out. Placing the doors flat helps flatten the enamel and provides a smoother surface. Once dry, you can turn the door over and paint the front. For the cabinet boxes, try to keep the edges wet (don’t start and stop, let the paint dry). I recommend applying a second top coat for added protection and an even shine.

Once everything is as dry as possible, start by removing the tape and plastic from the cabinet. Install the doors one at a time. (Now you will see if your door tagging system was effective!) Save the door settings until the end. I only use hand tools when installing doors and drawers; Drilling tends to pull out brittle screws. Install any handles or pulls and make the necessary adjustments so they are all straight.

Customers will love it when you install new clear rubber bumpers on the doors and drawers (they were removed during the prep process). It’s a small detail, but worth the effort.
