My wife and I bought a fixer. It was a facade with a window at the front that was old and rotten, and the existing brick was not the brick we wanted to show. When we replaced the front arched windows, we decided to have a mason to brick the central columns; The stone didn’t match the existing old stone, but we didn’t care because we wanted to whitewash our house just the same! We chose not to use white because using the wrong paint or not repairing chips or cracks can trap moisture in the porous stones, causing mold or chipping of the stone; But this route was the most expensive. We also researched German smears (white mortar mix) but struggled to find one in our area without a special order. After researching the lime wash, we were sold! All of this DIY took a few weeks (since we both work full time outside of the home) and the total cost was just under $750.

When preparing the consistency, just scoop out some lime and put it in another bucket. There will be instructions on how much to add, but it also depends on what look you want. If you want a thicker white, you will need less water; On the other hand, a thin white with a faded stone back needs more water. We settled for a little more white coverage because we planned to remove it the old fashioned way after placement.
We use a mix of ~3/4 part lime to 1 part water and then use a blender to mix everything well. Whatever amount you choose, make sure the consistency and size remain the same throughout the lime wash process to minimize the risk of staining.
Diluting the mixture will make it a thinner application and will be 3/4 to 1 part water to the mixture. If you want the mixture to be thicker, go for a water to mixture ratio of 1/2 to 3/4 part. Remember you can always add more water or blend if you don’t like the look.
Depending on the size of your home, this entire process can take several weeks. We had several friends help us during those 2 weeks so that the task was not as tedious as it could have been (totally Tom Sawyer style). We even got creative and turned the lights on my truck for a few nights to get it done in two weeks.
