Jan wrote his first novel at the age of ten. “This manuscript was written on green horse writing paper and, for good reason, my sister kept it. When she found it, she discovered the curse it had, which included, with a beating heart, the speech human. Because of Pete, Rhett Butler used the same name and didn’t run away? After being scolded by my grandmother, I wrote books without Cousin.’

A few years ago, Caron left a successful career in advertising to move to the mountain town of Blowing Rock, North Carolina, and write books. “I stepped out of faith to fulfill my lifelong dream of becoming a writer,” he says. “I really sacrificed and risked my life. But I think life is mostly about risk.
Enthusiastic booksellers across the country have brought Karon’s heartwarming books to readers of all ages. At Home in Mitford, Karon’s first book in the Mitford series, was nominated for an ABBY by the American Booksellers Association in 1996 and again in 1997. In “Come Rain or Come Shine,” Jan Karon adapted the Mitford story by Father Timothy Kavanagh. The next generation: their adopted son, Dooley, who will marry his lover Les Harper.
It was supposed to be a small, low-key event held at Meadowgate Farm, with a catered dinner and music by Dooley’s best friend Tommy; His team, the Ham Biscuits, and Les’s best friend, Beth.
Father Tim fans don’t have to worry if they’re missing out on all the fun of the wedding. It is part of this novel, the 13th in Caron’s best-selling Mitford series. Likewise, wife Cynthia, neighbor and friend Harley, the Dooley brothers, and other characters have become beloved by the reader.

As the story opens, Father Tim helps Dooley fix a broken cattle fence at Meadowgate, the novel’s setting. Giving Dooley the tools for the job, he says: “I was praying for a challenging retirement and he was alive. Instead, he was in the funniest years of Koona. Not everyone sees a young couple building a new life.”
Before the “Big Knot,” as Harley calls it, Dooley graduates from vet school and begins his veterinary career, Dooley’s heirs purchase the farm from Miss Sadie Baxter and consultant Hal Owen.
Joining the team are the bull Choo-Choo, whose unexpected name is in front of him, and, perhaps, the mysterious Jack Tyler, who often appears in the thoughts and prayers of Dooley and Les.
The days leading up to the wedding are filled with crossing tasks off the to-do list and battling the occasional fear of flatulence.

Take, for example, a gang, which invites you to worry about too many rotten eggs and fried chicken. Listening to party planners, dad Tim recalls, “Potluck paranoia was definitely created. It was ahead of the blanket and second in popularity to weather concerns.”
Father Tim isn’t sure either. “Now you understand why girlfriends go crazy, moms go crazy, and dads hide in the long grass.
Karon, who lives in Charlottesville, lets us hide in the tall grass. From multiple perspectives, it shows us what everyone thinks, prays and, in the case of Les, writes in his diary.
As she has done in previous Mitford novels, Caron offers her readers another chance to escape their country, if only for a moment, and live in a city that “takes care of itself.”

His students say they wish Mitford existed so they could go there, and “Come Rain or Come Shine” fueled their longing for a safe haven.
Will they like the book? As Father Tim says when someone asks how the wedding preparations are going, “Think like a nail.”
