65 weeks ago I posted a vlog on Instagram (and uploaded it to YouTube (https://youtu.be/5DaL0_j50n0)) about painting our master bedroom. This was not an ideal situation as the painting was the result of a flood. In our house. But there I was in a position where I could pick a color and wait for the painters to do the job. I noticed this vlog of mine was getting attention on my crappy youtube channel, I wanted to keep track of the color I chose.

I chose the Shiplap color – a color name by Magnolia Home that gives you a stark gray look that’s modern and somewhere between country white and grey. It looks white right out of the can. I thought I sold a can of white wine. I thought I had been scammed like others who said in their reviews they bought a very expensive can of white. I admit that I too was deceived. But I later realized that it wasn’t exactly white, but the light gray I wanted.

When I read Shiplap Paint reviews online, they were overwhelming and uninspiring. At the time, this paint line was fairly new, so the few and low reviews made me nervous.
Google keyword search for Instagram hashtags and colors only yields photos of actual walls that everyone has in their rustic home or kitchen. If it’s an overlap color, here’s an image of the color taken from the company’s website, with the same color stored digitally in the same room on the same wall, e.g. e.g.:
I didn’t think the company photos were as good as the original views from people like me, but it didn’t help that some of the people who claimed to have used the new color on Shiplap and posted on Instagram also used a filter or changed the lighting , when the finished painted house was shown; That’s a major disappointment for anyone looking for accurate color representation.
At some point I knew I had to take a risk. I ended up sticking with Shiplap because I trusted ACE Hardware’s color sample paper. The piece of cake was too dark for me and the pearl cotton was light with the gray I wanted but more yellow beige than I wanted. I was also very interested in the Panna Cotta and Silos White colors and noticed how nice it would look with the doors, trim and roof in True White, but Shiplap beats them by a mile.

It wasn’t until the two colors were painted side by side that I knew for sure that I hadn’t sold an expensive can of white paint.
I still love this color. If I had time, I would paint more shiplap walls in my house. I love how I look and feel when I wake up in the morning to my white desk, dresser and wall art.
For those wondering if everything is perfect, I found one negative aspect of this color – or color in general. The matte finish is nice and soothing, but very difficult to keep clean. It will hold any dirt or scratch it touches. I have never painted with a matte finish. The person who designed and selected the mat was a project manager who previously mentioned that he had previously only worked as a house painter. Who was I to question this guy?

Over time, the matte color on the high-traffic areas of my wall became less than prominent as the kids hung in the corner of the wall near the exit to my bedroom. But overall good luck with the tins that grace my master bedroom.

Rebecca, 47, from Lancashire, said the inspiration for the work came from an air freshener for sale called Crystal Air Brecon Beacons Wild Blossom and Fresh Mountain Dew.
“After spending time in such a distinctive place, it’s odd to try to minimize things that can’t be reproduced.
“It could be the scents that sell us air fresheners or the colors that we paint our living room walls with.”
Titled Snapshot, the artwork comes in the form of a color swatch that can be picked up at a hardware store.

Some names evoke the beauty of the landscape, such as “fallen snow,” which is described as “the purest white of snow pressed on the mountaintop.”
Others draw attention to pollution, such as “joyride” – the description is “forced burning of cars under abandoned quarries”.
Others are funky, like ‘Cagule’, which the artist describes as ‘a quintessentially British raincoat in many colors but here in a modern green’.
The tableau consists of 96 color paintings and was created from hundreds of photographs taken during Rebecca’s six-week stay in the national park.

“I’ve never been to the Black Hills before,” she said. “When I arrived I didn’t have a clear idea of what I was going to do.
“A national park is such an amazing place – how do you balance trying to attract visitors with a desire to protect the landscape? That was the starting point of my work.”
During her stay, Rebecca took hundreds of photos and had to narrow them down to 150 before selecting the final 96 for the tableau.
