The walls are a bit of a weird yellow, it’s not really me, it doesn’t go well with all the woodwork. But I want to feel superior.
So I got out my Benjamin Moore Fundex and if you can, maybe you can point out some of the best colors that make my stained wood trim sing!
In this article, we’ll cover a few things about stained wood and talk about some colors. So I made you a chart of 16 of my favorite colors that look great with wood trim.
Then I placed a small piece of wood next to the chip on the card to see how they would look together. More on that later.
How To Choose Colors That Complement Wood Furniture And Floors
How do you know to keep stained wood trim or paint stained wood trim?
That’s a great question, and this is how I feel about it. Often it’s just a matter of preference.
However, there are times when you should not paint stained wood paneling because the architect intended to stain it. Moreover, he is a legend like the famous and deceased Frank Lloyd Wright. If you paint his beautiful oak tree, he’ll be forced out of his grave, and his architect’s scale will give you a good kick on the knuckles!
If you live in a house built by Frank Lloyd Wright, painting over stained wood trim will be like putting a mustache on the Mona Lisa. (Leonardo would probably like that.) 😉
Best Paint Colors That Go With Wood Trim
The same is true for many architectural styles, such as Craftsman Style and sometimes Arts and Crafts, also known as Shingle Style. Some Craftsman-style homes are painted over and still stand.
And, frankly, I’ve softened my stance (a bit) on stained wood trim vs. stained wood trim, and here’s why.
First of all, if you don’t already know, trim is anything made of wood, including window and door frames, crown moldings, baseboards, banisters, panel moldings, wainscoting, and cabinets. Oh, and maybe suitcases or ceiling beams.
Below is a brownstone from New York City. Happy dogs! I have seen those houses painted with stained wood. At this point I’d like to paint it but I’ve seen some nice rooms like this with stained wood that looks nice.
How To Design Around Honey Oak
This is another artist from an architectural firm that I have admired for a long time. There is no stained wood except for a door. It’s a legitimate design decision. In general, in the 19th and 18th centuries, the doors were painted in a rich chestnut color and not painted.
Ok ok you are right. These are old half-timbered houses. While I appreciate them, it’s not my preference.
If you have one of these and would like to paint, I have no problem with that. If you want to keep the stained wood finish, that’s cool too.
This is right. If you live in a post-war house with woodwork, you can paint it if it is not a modern house. If the house isn’t strictly modern, you’ll want to add more moldings for interest.
Kitchen Paint Colors That Work With Oak Cabinets
The first one is sad for me. However, it is important to remember that a relatively bright, painted room will not fully live until the furniture is repositioned.
Below is a great example of an older home with beautiful stained wood and a nice paint color.
One color you might not have considered but that looks great on stained wood is a warm, rich red like Benjamin Moore Racing Orange – 2169-10.
Of course, many colors in the orange family look great in wood trim. Here is a post full of awesome orange.

Yes, I think so. Although I prefer a more classic shape like Gil Schafer has his nice brown stones.
You should probably consult a professional, but they will be able to go through the trim to deepen it. You can’t lighten stained woodwork, but you can sometimes make it a deep, rich color.
It is a Minwax product called Polishades. It is one stain and poly. You may need two or three coats, but it’s worth it to get the wood looking good again. However, if you can’t afford a pro, I’d try experimenting first.
She did not use polyshades, but other techniques that do not require a complete refinish. You can read more about this at the link below in the first image.
Dark Trim Paint Color Schemes That Work Perfectly
Of course, many colors are acceptable. Cool colors with gray in them always look good. Many colors in the Laurel Home Paint Collection are beautiful, stained wood.
This is a bad photo, but this could be a really nice space with the right wall color.
Another great wood finish color is warm deep brown purple. But not purple! One of my favorites is ELEPHANT GRAY 2109-50. This is a complex color and a shade that offers less contrast looks beautiful with midtone stained wood.

Brown-black with a black ceiling! If I had one house I’m sure I would never do it, but if I had 2 or 3 houses – sure!
The light blue-gray is a refreshing contrast to the rich mahogany-stained upholstery. Love it with the rod that inspires formality.

Some wood colors are actually interchangeable. However, I find some combinations particularly beautiful.
Ahhh… that’s the squeeze. I say this because the color of walls and moldings should not be considered alone.
