He’s getting to be a big boy (cue mommy tears) and his room needs some freshening up for a more sophisticated look. But let’s remember that he is only 6 years old. So I’m looking to accomplish three things with this change.

So I decided something had to be done! And it all starts with goal #2: lighten dark accents.
Her furniture is the same set we bought when she was born (can I get a hallelujah for convertible cribs?) and it still works great. So I thought I’d draw it! FYI- I really hate painting. I like it very much. But it was an easy DIY and cheap, so I got to work.
I have never tried Chalk Paint. I know I know It’s been a while and that’s why I never made a tutorial for you. There are already a lot of them out there and I’m sure mine will be second to none.
So I wanted to share a quick review of the brand I use: Rustoleum Chalked Ultra Matte Paint in Country Grey. (Side note: I started with Aged Grey, which is a lighter version of Country Grey. However, Aged Gray is actually more baby blue toned.)

I want a medium true gray and don’t want to pay an arm and a leg for it or have to go “to town” to find it. Since we live in a small town, the hardware selection is very limited and there are no big box stores.
As you can see, the wood is an engineered cherry wood finish. I didn’t want to rub it off, hence the chalk. So I split the bed, with the help of my handsome husband, and set up shop in the garage. On my card tables. Why don’t all skilled DIYers do this? 😉
I doubt it will take just one hand to get the coverage I need. Only one hand is rarely needed when it comes to painting.
Above you can see the coverage after one coat. Now there are some projects where a person might want a distressed look. If that was where I was going, then I would have stopped here and strategically broken up the areas to give that look.

But I feel like my son would struggle with all of this on his own with daily use. 🙂 So I like to give it a bit more staying power with a second coat.
As you can see, after the second coat there were some spots that rubbed off. But personally I think it’s because I’m impatient and need to give it some time to dry. I also didn’t mind a few smudged spots so I continued with the finish.
Here I have doubts what to do. I really don’t want to do another two coats of top. Because: impatient. But I asked some of my awesome friends on Instagram and they assured me that I would regret it if I didn’t.
So I used Rustoleum Ultra Matte Chalked Top Coat. I added two coats to it for extra strength.

And that’s how I feel about the products I use. (Note: I wasn’t paid to review this. I didn’t get anything for free and I’m in no way affiliated with Rustoleum. I just wanted to share my experience with you in case you’re looking for a cheaper one as well). .choice of chalk paint!)
Ta-da!! This is a little sneak peek of my son’s remodeled room!! I love how light and airy it is, even though I haven’t painted the walls. Getting rid of all the dark furniture brightened it up a lot.
