For this tutorial, we won’t be using the “Save the Date” card template. Instead, we’ll use it to design wedding invitations from scratch. Start by creating a new project and choosing the postcard size in portrait orientation.
Of course, you can choose different sizes and styles for your canvas. But if you’re going to follow this tutorial, it’s best to use the same size as ours.
The best way to plan your “save the date” is to choose the right photos. You can choose one of the engagement photos or find another photo that fits the wedding theme. Whatever image you choose, you should have no problem uploading it to your project.
Go to the left sidebar and select “Install” which is the second from the bottom. Click the “Upload Media” button, which will let you browse your favorite photos. Select the image and click “Open” to import it into the “Save Date” card project.

The modern “save the dates” often has an image as a central item. Therefore, even if you decide to resize it, you should keep the photo in the middle of the canvas.
Once the photo is in place, it’s time to put a border around it. Creating a border with a basic rectangle and some design magic.
Go to the “Add Component” menu in the left sidebar, go to “Basic Objects” and click the rectangle to add it to the project. Then drag the rectangle to cover the entire canvas.
On the right you will see the “Object Settings” menu. In this menu increase the Border Size to 30, then click on the black circle under “Object Color”. Doing so opens the color palette. Instead of selecting the content, click the white circle with a red stripe that makes the inside of the rectangle transparent.

Photos in “Save Date” will now appear and have a border, but the border will still have a solid color. Click the circle next to the “Boundary Weight” slider to change the shade. We went with the cream white paper but you can choose any color that fits your desired color scheme.
Until now, your “Save the Date” card only had an image with a border. Of course, it should show some text and decorations. Create a space for important information about your wedding day.
Since we’re going for a clean, modern “save the date” style, we’ll leave plenty of room for text. Requires the same technique as photo borders.
Add a rectangle, resize it, and drag it to cover the bottom of the canvas. After that, change the color to match the border. Complete by selecting the entire project and locking each layer in the “Layers” menu at the bottom right.

If you look at any of the “save the date” templates, you’ll notice that they always have a well-designed title. Just to bring a stylish style, we will add “save the date.”
Font selection is important here. We went with a script font as it resembles handwriting, which is the perfect style for a wedding “save the date” card. First, we typed “Save” and copied and edited that copy to read as “Date”.
We chose a different font for “In” to add some variety. The Averia Serif Libre is our pick for a rugged yet elegant look. We also added the “Angle” transform effect from the “Text Settings” menu.
Finally, some fonts have special characters called glyphs that can enhance your text. We put a slash to underline the word “Save”.

Now it’s time to add your wedding information to your “save the date” card. You will use the grid you created in step 4.
You can try some “save the date” ideas here. Specifically, you can use the same method to mix fonts as in the title, but reverse the fonts – most of the text here will only contain details from the font script.
Of course, the information box will include the name and most importantly, where and when the party guests will arrive. Most people prefer not to write anything but the basics, the wedding date and address. We did it with one small addition: “Jared and Marcy are getting married.”
You can create a wedding date by adding an oblique effect. This will let your friends and family know (and remember) the date.

A “save the date” wedding wouldn’t be authentic without floral embellishments – see our DIY floral wedding invitation card tutorial for details on the design. You’ll add these elements to give your wedding stationery some creative energy and life.
Even if we create a modern design, classic flowers will fit perfectly. Check out our “How to Make Vintage Wedding Invitation Cards” tutorial to see the classic elements in action. You can find these decorations under “Beautiful Flowers” under the “Add Item” menu on the left sidebar. A selection with a beautiful rose gold frame can be highlighted by making the content item transparent.
We decided to make the flower more prominent by making the border color black and reducing the opacity.
Once the design is complete, you can export it as “save the date” and it’s ready to print. To do this, go to “Download Options” (the third button from the top right) and select the size and format.
