That said, you really can’t go wrong with Sherwin Williams or Ben Moore. From a pure color quality perspective, they are pretty much the same. Likewise, both have low-end, high-end, and premium paint lines that are priced differently.
In general, Benjamin Moore or Sherwin colors are in a league of their own. Especially compared to Behr, Valspar or PPG paint brands.
Among professional painters, it’s like comparing Coke to Pepsi. Some prefer the taste of Coca-Cola or vice versa, Pepsi. Both brands of paint produce high-quality paint, but some painters swear by one or the other.

But Benjamin Moore has one major weakness compared to Sherwin-Williams paint. Before we get into that, let’s talk about the cost difference between Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams paints.
Benjamin Moore is slightly more expensive than Sherwin Williams house paint when comparing similar products. As mentioned above, both companies produce different interior and exterior color lines such as Cashmere, Emerald or Period. In general, the average gallon of paint is $53 at Sherwin Williams and $57 at Benjamin Moore.
Sherwin-Williams also offers Superpaint, which experts consider the best balance of price and quality in any color. For reference, Superpaint retails to consumers for about $48 per gallon. That’s about $30 less than Sherwin’s top-of-the-line Emerald.
In general, high quality paint is often worth the money, but only up to a point. Personally, I’m not a fan of ultra-premium paints like Sherwin’s Emerald or Benjamin Moore’s Aura. Both of these premium paints are quite expensive at around $70 per gallon.

Finally, it should be noted that paint prices are increasing due to the recent paint shortage. Epidemic and unstable climates have limited potential for color production. In fact, paint prices rose 10.6% in 2021 and are likely to rise even more in 2022. However, if you’re hoping to paint, you may want to pull the trigger early because of the shortage.

Here is Benjamin Moore’s obvious weakness compared to Sherwin Williams. Depending on where your home is located, it can be difficult to find a store that sells Benjamin Moore paints. That’s because Benjamin Moore distributes its paint through independent retailers like Ace Hardware and JCLicht. Contrast that with Sherwin-Williams, which owns and operates all of its retail stores.
Even if you have a Benjamin Moore paint store nearby, I’ve found that different independent retailers carry different product lines. For example, you won’t find some of the flat white ceiling paint lines that JCLicht carries at Ace Hardware.

This is the only deciding factor when choosing between Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore. As a painting contractor, if I had to drive an extra 15 minutes to a Benjamin Moore retail store instead of a Sherwin store, I would choose Sherwin. Comparing the color of the two brands is very close.
Whether you’re a painter or a homeowner, proximity to a paint store is something to consider. If you buy paint for painting, you will have to go to the store a few times to fix a gallon or something. You’ll certainly thank yourself for choosing a store near you when you compare antique paint in a few years.

All paint companies offer color consultations, Sherwin’s is free, and Benjamin Moore’s color consultations cost an average of $40-$80. Also, not all Benjamin Moore retailers offer this service. You can book a Sherwin design consultation online here. Unfortunately, a Benjamin Moore consultation can only be booked by contacting your local store.
Also, Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore share formulas so they can match each other’s colors when needed. However, I recommend that you retain your color and retailer choice whenever possible to minimize the risk of color mismatches.
Paint gloss is the sheen or sheen of the paint after it dries. In many ways, the brightness of the color you choose is as important as the color itself. Here, comparing Sherwin Williams to Benjamin Moore can further complicate matters. Each paint manufacturer has different names for their glazes. Complicating matters further, some individual color lines have their own specific brightness ratings.
To make choosing a gloss easier, visit your local paint store and ask for recommendations. For interiors, we recommend plan for ceilings; Mat or eggshell for walls; and satin or semi-gloss to finish. And for exteriors, we recommend a flat, matte or satin finish for the coating; and semi-gloss or gloss for cladding, doors and windows.
The 10 Best Paint Colours To Create Calm And Reduce Stress
Benjamin Moore’s best color product is Regal Select. In fact, over 50% of professional painters choose Regal Select as their preferred interior wall color. This is a high end 100% acrylic latex paint that checks all the boxes. As such, you can’t beat Regal for coverage, thickness and ease of application. It is known for its durability and ease of cleaning.
Like most wall paints, it requires two coats, but its color pigment retention is better than other comparable paints. Regal is priced higher at $50-$60 per gallon, but in most cases it’s worth every penny. However, Regal performs well and costs $10 to $20 per gallon less than Sherwin’s comparable Cashmere line. Benjamin Moore’s Regal is also a better paint than Sherwin’s Superpaint, but Regal is $10-$20 more per gallon.
Similarly, Regal Select is a low-release, mildew-resistant house paint. This makes it safe to use indoors during and after painting and reduces paint evaporation.
If you’re looking for low or no-VOC interior wall paint, look no further than Benjamin Moore’s Aura line of paint. It’s a step up from the Regal Select, making the Aura $15-$25 more expensive, but it’s a thicker paint that covers colors better.

Last but not least, both Aura and Regal Select are manufactured with Benjamin Moore’s Genex Color technology, which allows both colors to retain long-lasting, brilliant hues. This innovative technology reduces the VOC content of Regal Select and Aura paints.
You can think of Benjamin Moore as Regal Select’s little brother. As you can imagine, Benz Regal is $20 per gallon cheaper than Select. However, it performs better than other Sherwin Williams entry-level interior paints, such as A-100.
The main difference is that Regal Select provides better coverage and thickness compared to Ben. This is due to the high solids content in the paint. Also, Ben’s drying time is two hours compared to Regal’s one hour.
Also, the Regal has a wider variety of finishes than the Select Ben. In fact, the Ben only comes in flat, eggshell, and semi-gloss, while the Regal includes all three options, as well as matte and pearlescent finishes.
Favorite White Interior Paint Colors
But here’s a little-known fact about Ben’s interior painting by Benjamin Moore. Not only is it self-absorbing, but the eggshell and flat shine is close to zero. That’s why we still love using Ben Benjamin Moore for interior painting. Plus, Ben’s is about $30 less than Sherwin Williams’ Harmony zero VOC brand.
It is a reliable entry paint with good environmental performance. Our professional paint crews think this is a big win.
Another feature of the Benjamin Moore Company is the Advance line of interior alkyd paints. Advance is one of the best paints on the market for interior trim, doors, windows and door trim. It outperforms Sherwin Williams ProClassic paint finish in almost every way and remains low VOC even after tinting. Not to mention it’s $55 a gallon for the ProClassic and $70 a gallon for the cheapest.
