Hello everyone! Thank you all for your love for our backyard. The response has been overwhelming and we’re very excited about our new location…well, we’ve hit our area with this vicious and heinous wave of abuse in just a few weeks, over 106 people . It will not be tolerated here. Needless to say, we couldn’t wait for it to pass so we could spend more time outside. Although it’s been warm lately, we’re really starting to feel the heat, even with one of the biggest projects in the entire space: painting the deck. Fortunately, I did it before the real Scorchers arrived. Today I will share how I came up with this project.

The biggest goal of our outdoor space is to make it feel like home. I wanted to really blur the interior and exterior lines and knew that drawing the deck would be a big factor in helping to achieve this result. As good as natural mahogany, I don’t want it to look or feel like a standard wood deck. I love the warmth of the wood floor color in the house and want to replicate it outside.

Stain Color Hill Country

Because we were using mahogany, we had to wait a few months after it was built before applying a stain or protective layer on it. This allows the wood and oil to dry well, so it absorbs stains better and retains better color. Construction was done in February, we let it dry for 5 months and then painted in July. If you’re using wood like pine or Douglas fir, you probably won’t have to wait to apply the stain. After developing a game plan to tackle the project, I ordered Sherwin-Williams trim and materials.

I used a brush, roller, metal tray, spray pump and Sherwin-Williams Superdeck Cleaner and Stain for this project.

As with any painting project, great results start with a clean and well-prepared surface. I cleaned and cleaned everything on the deck. Then, I gave it a good scrub. I use the SuperDeck Revive Deck and Siding Brightener to clean and wash the deck. This formula is suitable for special or new untreated cedar, rosewood or pressure treated wood.

I got a little help with this part of the project as I need to make sure the product doesn’t dry out on the wood during use. Naomi and I worked in small sections, wetting the area and applying Superdeck Revive using a pump sprayer.

After applying, she cleans it with a polyethylene brush. Then we let it sit for about 10 minutes and then rinse it off with a high pressure hose.

Once we got our hands on the sweet spot, things moved very fast. After cleaning the deck, we let it dry overnight. The next morning, the tree looked fresh, refreshed, and alive…

When I was ready to wash and stain the deck, I did another broom sweep and found it around the house where the decks meet to protect the exterior paint.

Now is the time to apply the stain. I chose the Superdeck Outdoor Water Formula in a semi-solid color. When choosing a deck stain, you should consider maintenance and how often you may need to refinish. A good rule of thumb is that the darker or less noticeable the color, the more frequent the service. Clear coat and translucent stains require more frequent maintenance and reapplication, while semi-hard or hard stains may last longer before being reapplied. SuperDeck is great because you can use it on wet wood too.

Stain Color Blue Shadow

The Superdeck stain is available in a variety of colors, I chose the maroon SW 3524 color. I wanted a dark brown, which was perfect when I tested a color changer a few months ago. Once again I swapped a small area to change it

Now listen guys…your girl dreads the first clean blow. Like super scared. We saved a lot of time building the deck and the last thing I did was tear it down. This project made me believe in my vision and believe in the process. I roll the stain with a small deck roller first, then use a 6 inch deck brush to gently push back and forth to clean it up. Always use with texture direction.

There is a bit of a learning curve when using the stain as it is different from other stains I have used before. You apply it like paint, let the product sit on the wood for a few minutes, then roll/sand without rubbing the color. It took me a while to get the bearings, but once I did it was smooth sailing. I’m also running against the grain so I have to move fast. I realized from day one that I prefer to dye with just one brush, so I pulled out my other horsehair brushes (Purdy is my favorite!) and used them throughout the project.

Please save me next time I have a crazy idea to reinvent the deck! If I tell you, it will be there forever! I didn’t realize how big the deck was. Hand on the board. It was huge and took a lot longer than I expected due to its size. Plus, when it’s below 90 degrees, I can work for a short while later in the evening. I suggest you consider a deck painting project in fall or spring when the weather isn’t too hot or too cold…just make sure there’s no rain in the forecast. Don’t even get me started cleaning between everyone. one way

Choosing The Perfect Wood Stain: Science + Art + Nature

It’s been several days, but I finally finished my first shirt. I really want to take the time to get good grades. Slowly, I saw the scenes start to come together.

The beauty of Superdeck’s water-based formula is that it dries quickly and can be reused. You can apply another coat after 4 hours, for semi-hard finishes you may need to apply two thin coats for best results. Depending on the size of the project, this product can get you done in one day! After the second coat is done, I let it dry overnight before transferring to the deck.

After about 48 hours, I did a water test to test the moisture resistance of the stain and was happy to see the water absorbed and rolled off immediately.

I think a lot of people are surprised when I say I painted the deck because we use mahogany for construction and people often leave mahogany decks in their natural state. It is a high quality wood with various rot and nature/element resistance properties. If left untreated or left untreated, it will turn to a warm grey after work. Sure, it’s beautiful, but I know when we do it for the first time, I’m going to be the center of attention. I am very happy with the end result. It looks beautiful and makes the space feel like a resort.

Deck And Fence Renewal Systems

If you are considering a deck painting project, I definitely recommend Sherwin-Williams SuperDeck products. They also come in oil-based formulas, so you might want to try them the next time you need to paint your deck. I’m one of those weirdos who likes to use oil-based products because it gives you more control over the process. It dries slower than water-based stains (which can be a negative for many), but it gives you more leeway if you take the time to apply it properly.

You’ll find a lot of useful information on how to paint your deck and tackle other painting and staining projects.
