Sherwin Williams Pre Catalyzed Lacquer – When I started using Furniture in January 2015, I didn’t expect it to end up here. At the time I was just looking to do a high end, a professional finish and a brush on the paint (or car) just wasn’t going to cut it. I bought an airsoft gun, built an airsoft kit and I guess the rest is history? 🙂

Sherwin Williams Pre Catalyzed Lacquer
Varnish is not available in all countries, or in all locations due to VOC regulations. You can’t go to a hardware store and find a gallon of paint. After talking to several furniture manufacturers and professional painters, I learned that catalyzed varnish is what everyone uses for varnish. Sherwin Williams is selling one and only one commercial location in South Seattle. The product is called Sherwood Pre-paint varnish and it is difficult for paint to transfer from regular paint to varnish which has to be special and match the color. It can take a long time and they often want to sell in bulk. Taking only 1 liter of paint is not the easiest process and often involves the manager.

Another artist I spoke to used Valspar pre-catalyzed varnish purchased from Rodda (yes, Valspar, Lowes brand). There is a local Rodda paint shop about 15 minutes from me and that’s where I bought the paint. Another good thing is that Valspar lacquers come in many glosses including gloss (this is the gloss I’m after). Other political brands only have a nice satin finish, but they have a good selection. Rodda offers many colors and shades to match. I painted it with Sherwin Williams Elephant Ear 1 gallon pre-painted varnish and it took about 2 days to be ready for pickup.
Varnish is sold in 1 gallon or larger containers. Prices will vary depending on the type and color. Some stocks charge for color matching, but others don’t. 1 gallon of valspar pre-paint varnish I bought resold for $60 and set me back about $40 with the paint company. Overall, I found the price to be good and compared to other water and oil products I have purchased.
I know I’m not the best person to try to explain the meaning of varnish first. You may be better off looking for an expert who has written about the product and its benefits and issues. This is my best attempt at a simple explanation of what I understand about varnish.
Pre-hardened varnish is a very durable product and what makes it different from other / regular varnishes is that it has an extra coating or hardness when you buy it. Another varnish (post-catalyst varnish) where the professional user/artist installs the catalyst in the shop before use. From what I know, the first cat paint is alive and when I buy the sale date of the paint is a kind of “best by…” date.

First of all, I must say that breathing is necessary when spraying anything (even preparing), especially when using materials that do not use water such as varnish. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for proper safety precautions. Gloves are also important to protect the skin from contact.
I talked in detail about my painting and the preparation I usually do. Bondo ice putty is a filler to cover small scratches and dents in furniture. I think this product still fits in the varnish. I have never had a reaction when spraying varnish. Applying polish and then filling in anything you miss will cause a reaction to the polish and I don’t recommend it. The solution in the filler acts as it sits on top of the paint as it dries. What are all the preparations that need to be done beforehand.
Another thing I do differently with paint is that I don’t prioritize. The main reason I don’t think it should be because the first coat of paint can be used as a primer and you have to be careful what you use in the paint. If the wrong product is used on the paint, it can cause problems such as sagging that just need a lot of work to fix. I like to do the usual preparation of sanding and filling and then spray with the first coat of paint. After drying, I use high-quality sandpaper to smooth the finish, clean it with a lint-free cloth, and then proceed with the next iron.
Lacquer is best used in a spray gun. Trying to wash off the varnish is not good. If you want to do it, the “polish brush” you want (I’ve never used one). Varnish dries quickly for brush application. From what I have read, the HVLP spray gun is good for spraying paint. I have and use a Husky gravity flow HVLP spray gun for all my finishes. More information is available about my device and settings. The Valspar high gloss that I buy and use has a consistency that allows me to take it straight from the can and put it in my spray gun without thinning. To clean out the particles that can be in the paint, I run through the paint sprayer while pouring into the gun. I also use cleaner/cleaner on the gun when I smoke what.

I wash the paint like normal paint. One thing I adjust if necessary is the amount of product that comes out of the gun. If the position on my gun allows too much paint to spray, it will rain. At the same time, I have to make sure I have enough luck to get out of the gun or not enough will come out and cause an uneven beam. It’s a balancing act with settings and settings to get the best results.
In my experience, I get the best results when the edges I drill are horizontal. When I put it on straight, I usually end up with a lot of products that I use to get the same result that flows together and shimmers in the same gloss. I usually paint one end and then flip and move the piece so that the other end I glue horizontally. I also tried to cover the first part (when it was completely dry) to preserve the finish and prevent it from spreading up. The longer ones are difficult because the light can fall on things that are already dry and a bit rough. I usually hold the paper and move it around while painting so that the water doesn’t get on the parts I’m painting that have dried.
The way the varnish works is that it dries when the thin varnish is removed from the product. The advantage of varnish is that it dries quickly, but it can also be problematic and confusing. I washed the paint out to get as much air as I could. It is not advisable to spray paint in closed spaces. I try to wash in the shade on cooler days/times. 60-75F is good in my experience.
The paint begins to dry when it comes out of the spray gun and comes in contact with the air and is usually dry to the touch in 10-20 minutes depending on the application. Since I use more consistency to get an even finish that flows together, I find the drying time on the side again. You can wear and reapply within 30 minutes to 1 hour. Follow the can manufacturer’s instructions for drying and recoating times as they can vary.
What Is Conversion Varnish?
It is important to properly clean and dispose of liquids and waste. Paint thinner is what you need to thin (and thin) spray paint. I poured the remaining paint from the spray gun into the pan and then applied thinner paint. When I remove the gun, I wipe it down and pour paint thinner over each part until completely clean. For disposal I have a special waste bucket to dispose of my things that I will dispose of properly. Please educate yourself on proper waste handling and disposal.
Varnish usually dries completely within an hour. After all the thin paint is gone, it needs to be cured on a hard and permanent surface. Obviously, I don’t use it either
