Earlier this year, we realized that it was time to paint all the decorations around our windows. After some honest research and evaluation of the quality of our deck painting work, we decided it was in our best interest to handle this project professionally.

While we were at it, we decided to update the colors of the shutters and doors. Although I have never bothered with the original colors since we bought the house, I decided that changing them would add a lot to the overall look of the house. I’m right!

I had a few color ideas in mind, but went to Pinterest and searched for “brick houses” for inspiration. Then I used Benjamin Moore’s personal color viewer to see what the colors would look like in real life. This is much easier than standing in front of a painted wall at the hardware store.

See how close the final score is? I chose the colors of Benjamin Moore: Arctic Seal (CSP15) for the shutters and side doors and Province Blue (2135-40) for the front door.

This really is the peg that sealed the deal for me – and I’m very pleased with how it plays out in my home!

The side doors used to be white and that’s a color I’m happy to get rid of! It exposes all red clay and dirt in general to the outdoors. I think gray would be much more forgiving.

How To Choose Exterior Paint Colors For Your Home

I brought home paint samples that I tested before confirming the color with our contractor. They’re a bit expensive – about $12 each, but I still have enough to use on other projects or paint doors for a few more years. It is definitely worth the money so make sure I love the color!

If you decide to go the DIY route, my friend Whitney has a really helpful article about her experience of success. Especially if you’re just painting doors, I think you can very well do it yourself. Unless you’re me. 🙂 Time to paint and redecorate our brick house! When I started thinking about updating our backyard, I knew I wanted to paint the ceiling white to brighten up the space. Of course, this got me down the rabbit hole in decorating and walling our entire house. Here we’re talking exterior paint colors to update our brick home in week 2 of the One Place Challenge. (Read my weekly 1 post here for an introduction to our backyard and 5 ways to warm up your backyard in the fall).

After spending the last month looking for inspiration and colors, I’ve discovered a lot about how to choose the right color to match our brick. However, I have had a hard time finding a lot of information on how to update the tiles for your home and choose colors if you want to keep your tiles natural rather than painting, washing lime, washing plaster, etc Read on for the All Tips and Tricks I’ve Learned collection on how to choose the right exterior paint color for a natural brick home.

Before choosing a paint color for our brick house, we have to decide if we want to keep the brick natural or cover it. We chose not to tiling because while we love the look of a bright white house, we also love the beauty of natural tiles. Any color or wash you do is permanent. So since we love our brown brick color, I don’t want to hide its beauty forever. We can always cover it later if we want, but we can’t go back once we’re done.

Now that we know why we want to keep the brick natural instead of the paint/wash trend, let’s move on to choosing paint colors for a natural brick house.

Choosing colors for a natural brick house adds a different composition than a fully painted house. Paint colors should coordinate with tiles to create a cohesive exterior.

There are several factors to consider when choosing exterior paint colors for a brick house, including:

An easy way to choose a trim color (rather than guessing) is to match the color that would normally appear on your tile, grout, or roof (if it’s newer and won’t be replaced anytime soon). If you have a sample of your tile, you can bring it to the store for color matching. But since I don’t have one, I’ll just take a bunch of swatches. After I narrow down the scope, I will paint a few test patches on our house to make sure the colors look right.

Tips And Tricks For Choosing Exterior Trim Colors {color Palette Monday}

The trick to finding the right color for your home is to match the tone of the tile. Tile colors can vary widely, so it’s important to match the tone of your brick, whether it’s brown, gray, pink, yellow, purple, and more. Our tiles are warm brown with some light and dark spots and light gray plaster. also happens to be warm brown. So the paint color I choose should have a warm/brown tone. The same tone combinations apply to any color you might choose for your brick home. For example, if you like green or blue accents, you’ll want the green or blue you choose to match the tone and blend in with your home’s overall color palette.

Okay, this might seem obvious, but before you pick a color, you should get inspired to find what you want. As with any project I do, I like to save everything to a Pinterest board to keep everything in one easy place so I can compare side by side. I also started paying attention to the decorative colors of the brick house as I walked or drove around and kept in mind what I liked and didn’t like. I have to include this as a step because it is the dead truth. Unless you are a very indecisive person (which I am not), you will have to go back and forth between all the color schemes you think you could want. Exterior colors are much harder to choose than interior colors because you can’t just throw a few swatches on the house and know how it will look in your home.

I’m a very intuitive person, so it’s much easier for me to know what I want. My process for this is to apply layers of different colors on our house to see how they look. I used Adobe Illustrator to create a very realistic model, but there is no reason to be too complicated. I actually did it first with the color feature on my phone, but decided I needed a better image. There are many options, including free online color visualizers and professional services to model your exterior design. The whole point of this step for me is to see our entire home in the colors I’m considering so I can compare them side by side.

Paint Colors For Your White Brick House

As I mentioned above, once you know the general paint color you want for your home, you will want to choose a color that matches the natural color of the brick. For our home, I plan to choose white that comes from the natural color that occurs in our tiles, combined with a neutral black to create a certain focal point. We haven’t finalized the color of the siding, but it will probably be a brown that harmonizes with the brick and/or roof.

Before committing to your chosen colors, I strongly recommend painting samples from your home, such as part of a window or door, to confirm that the colors look right on the brick. your. It can also help you decide between two colors if you’re not sure which one to choose.

Here it is! Who knew choosing an exterior paint color could feel like such a feat! For our project we decided to hire a professional to paint our house. In the quotes we receive, each quote includes pressure washing, crack repair and any repairs, plus the cost of paint and materials. If you decide to decorate your home on your own, make sure you know the whole process and don’t skip any steps!
