Homeowners want a cool, light-filled space, not dark and cave-like. But many of you have a hard time convincing your loved ones that it’s “okay” to stain wood. There’s something about the naturalness of stained wood—and brick—that appeals to men outdoors. But over the past decade, we’ve seen before-and-after photos to prove that staining stained wood is a good idea for most homes, and there’s no reason to shy away from it.

It’s like a brick. There are also “unpainted brick” cleaners, but many brick houses have been modified by painting them so that there is not much “woman’s resistance”. In fact, if you do a search on Houzz for “exterior brick house ideas”, most of the photos are of brick, not raw! You can also find some with a Google search (and all the unpainted brick houses that come up are perfect candidates for a paint job!). If you are given the choice to keep a red brown house or change it to white, cream or gray, many, if not most, choose to renovate.

But should you paint your brick house for design reasons? Are there other reasons to paint the brick or not? I’m a big fan of painted brick houses, so to avoid practical considerations I like to start with the “how”.
If your brick house has a bad color, any moisture that gets into it can cause the paint to crack and at worst, damage the brick over time. You don’t want water to get under your paint through cracks or gaps like window and door frames, so it’s important to prepare your home before you paint. (Moisture problems are not a problem if the brick is inside your home, such as a chimney or wall.)

Use a professional painting company to paint exterior brick. And don’t use the cheapest one either. This is not just a personal recommendation. Professional painters are often more eagle-eyed than homeowners in spotting cracks or gaps that need to be covered or filled. They will also use the correct pH balance for the masonry and the correct paint that will protect the brick while allowing it to “breathe”. And they apply these products in a uniform coat that’s thick enough to protect the exterior brick from the elements, but not so thick that it peels off over time. Painting a rough, porous surface like brick is more involved than painting a stucco or wood house. This is one area where you don’t want to take shortcuts.
Dirt and mold that you never noticed before because your brick is a mixture of different reds and browns? You will see now. You may need to wash your home from time to time, although this is true of any painted exterior, not just brick. This is because the dirt and mold that accumulates on the outside of the house is more visible when your house is painted. On the other hand, if you’re not happy to discover that your colorless brick house is like a giant trap for dirt and debris, you’ll feel better about the exterior. Fresh paint that cleans up easily!

Nothing but full color can transform such a house. If your home is historically significant, you can leave the brick alone and make minor adjustments, such as painting the shutters, pediments and front door. Adding some contrast will soften any red and muddy browns. But these small changes do not affect the painting of the brick facade.
In fact, someone chose the color of the bricks when your house was built. This color is a design choice. If you no longer like (or dislike) this design choice, you don’t have to live with a red house forever.
An important element of good home design is contrast. A beautiful mix of light and dark elements, including landscaping, is what makes a home so attractive. Start looking for change when you look at buildings and you’ll see examples everywhere. White painted wooden walls, black metal windows, copper gutters and metal roofs are examples. Exterior brick often blends in with its surroundings. They have the same average value (lightness/darkness) in trees and shrubs. And some bricks are more “colored” or busy. You’ll have to work hard to make features like doors, windows and windows pop on the massive brick exterior.

The paint acts as an insulator to protect your home from rain and other seasonal changes while allowing the brick to “breathe.” The caveat is that the project should be done by an experienced masonry painter who knows the importance of using the right paint product and sealing cracks that allow moisture in.

If you can contrast the different elements of your house and your bricks, and you like the color of your bricks, you can leave it. It is important that the element of contrast is large. The thin edges of your white vinyl window won’t cut it. Here is an example where design features such as pediments, door and window surrounds, and shutters have sufficient weight to minimize the width of the bricks.
