Our TJILLEVIPS baskets are made from jute, a versatile plant fiber that can be made into beautiful and functional items for the home. The Indian jute industry has traditionally been dominated by men, but one of our suppliers suggested that women be employed to make TJILLEVIPS baskets. An initiative that helps bring about greater equality and better opportunities for women in rural India.
“I was approached by one of our old suppliers in the Kerala region who suggested that we focus on women to make our TJILLEVIPS baskets,” says Nidhi Bhayana, who works with textiles in India. “We think it’s a great idea! With this initiative we can contribute to equality with providers and create more opportunities for local women.”
The supplier immediately started organizing the work. They started to employ women who lived near the factory and came from the lowest income group. Providers also educate women about health and safety, educate them about fair wages and legal rights, and train them to manage bank accounts and ATM cards. “The salary goes directly to the women’s personal accounts. This is a way to hold them accountable and ensure that the money goes to the people who actually do the work,” said Nidhi.

The quality could be better for the price Samantha H. The baskets definitely have a “natural” look. The color is brown and very light. I bought 6 of these baskets and they all have dark spots that look like mold. On closer inspection, it seems that this is only a feature of natural materials. This basket has the potential to be included in clothing with all loose fibers. I think $12-$15 per basket is a more reasonable price. Maybe some mineral oil would improve the look? I noticed that some reviews mentioned the following drop. If the bottom is installed correctly (and the instructions show the correct way to install this product), I can see why the bottom needs to go in.4
