When I decided to design my first container house, my goal was to make it simple and affordable. The original design is not very flexible, but there is almost everything that one person needs. In my opinion, not enough for two people for a long time, but one person would be comfortable here. It can be a great vacation home, a boarding house, or a place for a grown kid who has returned home after college, as many people do today.

Shipping Container Homes: Cost, Design, And Everything Else To Know
I was amazed that I could fit so much into 160 square meters. There is a bathroom with three fixtures, a small kitchen, a washer/dryer combo, a “great room” that combines a living room, dining room, bedroom and study/work area, as well as two closets. The dining table doubles as a desk, and the futon bed folds out at night to create a full-size mattress.

Needless to say, 160 square feet is not much. I tried to create a more spacious feel by installing some glass to allow for natural light and views. Each bathroom and kitchen have their own windows, and the great room has four windows and double doors.
A small water heater can be installed under the kitchen sink or in a cabinet next to the washer/dryer. Another option is to mount a tankless water heater on the bathroom wall or raise the washer/dryer on a platform and place the RV water heater under it or maybe even above it. In climates where freezing is not a problem, you can install a tankless water heater outside your home.
Square Foot Backyard Shipping Container House
I drew it using Google SketchUp, which I’m not very good at yet. I am aware of some issues you may notice, such as the missing foundation, frame and electrical outlets. In addition, the shower will need curtains or a hinged shower door, since the location of the sink will interfere with the movement of the door.
If you are building a container house in a cold location, you will need to cover the floor, walls and roof. You can also place a container on a base in the crawl space. This is probably the best solution in cold climates, as it will allow insulation to be placed under the container, thus saving money.interior in, you can place it in a free space if you have access to it).
By the way, this small house project does not have to be built in a shipping container. It can be custom built with a gable or single-gable roof and any type of siding, roof and trim you like.

Ok A lot of people have been asking so I did a quick calculation of how much it would cost. My estimates include frames, doors, windows, plumbing, most interior trim, washer/dryer installed, insulation, water heater, finished kitchen and propane heater. I evaluated most of the products at a large building materials store. For the most part, I chose not the most expensive things, but not the most expensive either. I have not included any labor, tools, decking, electrical materials, fixtures, furniture, or any plumbing materials other than fixtures and faucets. All items are considered new, but without taxes or discounts. The cost of materials alone (not including the shipping container itself) was $10,075. In general, used 8×20 shipping containers can be found for between $1,000 and $3,500. You will need a “HC” (High Cube) because they are a foot taller and you need room for framing and insulation.
I won’t go into detail about the costs, but the cost of framing materials, insulation, drywall, doors, windows, and flooring was about $4,470. The bathroom was $1,010, and the kitchen, including washer/dryer, water heater, and ready kitchen, was $3,395. Substituting recycled materials can significantly reduce costs. The biggest items were a washer/dryer ($1,200), a propane heater ($1,300) and a compact kitchen with built-in appliances ($1,600). The total value of these three items is $4,100 (plus shipping). Building your own kitchen and using a laundry room can significantly reduce your initial investment.
