Even if you hire a contractor to paint your kitchen cabinets, I would still recommend that you request that they use alkyd paint on your kitchen.
My favorite type for painting cabinets is a hybrid alkyd paint It’s a recent development in the paint industry, designed to mimic oil-based paints without all the harmful VOCs and messy cleanup. Acrylic alkyd enamel is now a water-based paint that makes it easy to clean, yet creates a very durable finish without the need for a top coat.
A few years ago there were only two paint companies that produced this type of paint in a water-based finish. Please be aware that alkyd-based paint will be more expensive than traditional “canvas paint” with all these advantages. Of course, different brands have different price points, so you can save money there if you want Low gloss will also be cheaper *Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore paints are others that come in a flat/matte gloss over alkyd paint. Other, cheaper brands only offer satin, semi-gloss and gloss finishes as options.

If you were looking for my personal favorite out of all these brands, I would have to pick Sherwin Williams Pro-Classic Paint. Of course, it is also the most expensive Having said that, I have used all of these other brands and have been very happy with them This color is amazing!
If I had to pick a favorite among the more budget-friendly colors (between Valspar, Behr and Dutch Boy), I’d pick Behr. I have used Behra alkyd paints on my kitchen cabinets and have been very happy with how well they have held up for 3 years. Below is a video I made a year later to show my kitchen cabinets painted with Behr Urethane Alkyd.
I used it on a small piece of furniture and was happy with it compared to other less expensive alkyd paints. I just noticed that it has received very mixed reviews With that in mind, I would recommend it with caution It seems that some people have not been able to consistently achieve good results with this color

Oil-based paints have almost become obsolete because they have developed paints that have oil-based advantages over water-based finishes. (“Alkyd” has always been an oil-based type of paint, but now this modified alkyd is water-based. Instead, search for keywords when choosing paint for cabinets or furniture, and avoid the others!
