If your brick walls get dirty, you can restore their color with a homemade cleaner. First, moisten the bricks with a hose or spray bottle. This way, the bricks will absorb your cleaner and fade over time. Mix 1 cup each of table soap and dish soap to make a paste. Next, apply a double layer to the brickwork. Leave it for 5-10 minutes, scrub the wall with a brush, then wipe the putty with a damp cloth. For tough stains, use an acidic cleaner that you mix with water and spray on the wall. Be sure to wear gloves and goggles to prevent the acid from irritating your skin or eyes. To keep your bricks looking good for longer, apply a siloxane or silane-based sealant to the entire wall surface. For more tips, including how to replace loose bricks, read on! In the last post, you mentioned that we exposed the brick wall. I didn’t mention how dirty the bricks were. The walls were covered with lime and a lot of dust and salt (because of the flowers). We were able to cut the plaster with household items, but I wanted to clean the bricks in the most efficient way.

I turned to Google and read hundreds of suggestions. I’ve found that there are many options (brushing, soapy water, acid), but many people use a wire brush to clean the interior bricks. I immediately went to my local hardware store and bought the three wired brushes shown below.

Our favorite brush for all purposes (cleaning bricks and mortar, removing small bits of grout, etc.) was a 3 x 19 row wire brush. We spent 4-5 hours drying the brick wall. The brushing caused so much dust that we had to seal off the entire area.

Unfortunately, even after dry brushing, the wall looked dirty. Also, I’m sure my right arm and right shoulder will be forever sore from the amount of cleaning required!

The next method we tried was to wet the wall with water and a brush. (If this wall had been outside, I would have rinsed it off.) This produced a lot of water (a big mess), but was fairly effective at cleaning up the bricks. A certain amount of dust was also formed when the water became trapped in the dirt. It took us another 3-4 hours, after which the wall became incredibly dirty. Below, the damp areas looked clean, but continued to dry out the faint, dirty areas that created a static dust.

Jonas broke in and we had more time at home to keep cleaning the bricks. Our local hardware store had a Thompson Water Seal Oxy Foaming Action Cleaner. We tried painting and spraying the wall. Honestly, she didn’t do anything at all. The water method works just as well as this cleanser. However, intensive cleaning requires another 2-3 hours of work. We also bought a wire brush drill attachment to clean the bricks…a waste of money. It was too abrasive for soft bricks and really damaged the surface.

Finally, we told builders to use muriatic acid. In my initial research I read about acid and how unnecessary it is. I’m here to say… It has been more effective for us. I recommend eye protection, thick rubber gloves, a bucket and an acid brush for application.
