Can You Paint Or Stain Travertine Tile – Earlier this year I contacted a homeowner in the village of Swallowfield, near Reading, about removing a red wine stain from their travertine floor. Usually these requests are related to a few bites of alcohol after the party, but in this case the problem was much bigger.
It turned out that their building was being renovated and there were various jobs throughout it working on different things. After returning to the property after a weekend it became clear that an expensive wine rack had fallen over and broken two bottles of red wine in the process. As a result, one and a half quarts of red wine spilled onto the travertine tile and grout, and instead of plugging the leak, the contractors threw it on paper towels and left for the weekend.

If you have a travertine floor, it’s best to clean the stain right away, leaving it too long increases the chances of the stain breaking the sealer and contaminating the stone and grout. In this case it was left for too long and the red liquor reached the top of the tile and darkened its appearance, my client was not happy.
Whitewashed Travertine Backsplash
One of the benefits of being a part of a team like Tile Doctor is that they have developed a wide range of products and methods to handle all types of situations related to stone, tile and grout cleaning. Although the most popular job we do is cleaning and sealing floors, sometimes we are called upon to solve unusual problems like this. Long story short I was able to arrange a site visit where I demonstrated a successful cleaning, I was impressed with the results of the demo where the work was put in place.
The first job was to clean the tiles to remove any wine residue, I did this with Tile Doctor Neutral Tile Cleaner, washed with plenty of water and removed the soil with a wet vacuum. Although this improved the stain somewhat, it was clear that the alcohol had seeped into the stone. At this point, the client was very concerned that it would not move, but I assured him that this was the first step in the process and he encouraged me.
As I mentioned earlier, Tile Doctor has developed a number of products and methods and these include Tile Doctor Redoxa which is a specialist stain remover that only aims to remove acid stains from stone.
Work in small batches Reduxa is sprayed onto the stained plate, left to soak and dried with a heat gun. Whenever the treated area is dried in this way, the heat evaporates the product, taking the stain with it. It sounds simple but this process needs to be repeated six to eight times until the stain is invisible to the eye.
Refinishing System Of Travertine Tile Floor
After removing the stain, I needed to restore the stone finish to the affected area using a series of polishing pads from 400 to 3000 grit. These pads remove old sealers and restore the finish on travertine. It is necessary to wash the floor with water and vacuum afterwards because coarse cloths create dirt.
I came back the next day to seal the stone again, but the floor needed to dry before applying the sealer, so I first checked the moisture level with a moisture meter. Fortunately, the floor was dry, so I was able to seal directly using two good coats of Tile Doctor Ultra-Seal.
Ultra-Seal is a non-glossy, natural-looking penetrating sealer that provides maximum protection without darkening or altering the stone’s appearance. It is also a very good grout.
When I finished the floor it looked like new and all signs of wine stains were gone, my client was very happy and relieved.

Tired of your stone backsplash? Here’s a step-by-step guide on how I painted my travertine tile backsplash!
We are currently in the middle of a major room renovation. We make small and large changes to our dining room and living room to make them feel our style.
Actually, we don’t change much in the kitchen. When we moved it we installed new cabinetry and lighting. We painted on the kitchen wall, but that was it.

Although I don’t like the finish of our kitchen, we plan to completely redo the space in the next 12 to 24 months, so I didn’t think painting the cabinets was a big project.
Let me preface this by saying – if you have this tile in your house, I’m sorry. This is not a diss for you! Travertine was very popular in the Tuscan home decor era and that’s fine if you like it.
And maybe I don’t hate all travertine backsplashes. But the tones on these really feel like they clash with the cabinetry and countertop options. (I don’t like the countertops either but I’ve decided we’ll be remodeling the entire kitchen soon, not that either of us are looking to do anything with them.)
In fact, in our first apartment, we painted faux curtains. As such, we painted a grid of tiles on the drywall.
How To Change Color Of Travertine Tile?
It was a lot of work. Here it was very easy to add a few coats of paint to paint the travertine backsplash that was already there.
I really wanted to capture the capiz look here with our backsplash. We have 2 large chandeliers in our basement and I wanted to bring a nice feel to the kitchen.
Another thing I love about travertine is the natural variation in tone of the tile. So they are different shades of brown, light to medium.
I think it’s similar to capiz, which is a natural seashell material with a slight difference in tone.

We were lucky enough to get some leftover tiles from this back left by the previous owner. I used them to practice and test my paint for color and durability.
You can see from the swatches that 2 I painted it with primer and 2 I painted it without primer.
Primed samples were whiter and had a cooler, more uniform tone. I liked the unfiltered ones with more heat and reflective tiles.
The results blew my expectations out of the water. I think it looks amazing, and although it’s subtle, it’s very useful.
How To Darken Travertine Naturally
Also, I did the entire project while sleeping. Seriously, less than 2 hours total, start to finish. You can’t beat it!
The first step is to thoroughly clean your backsplash. Backsplash is designed to protect your drywall from stains and splashes and splashes.
A note about sanding: If you’re painting on a glossy or glass plate, you’ll want to lightly sand the plate to roughen the surface to help the paint stick. Paint very easily on glossy chip surfaces. In travertine or similar stone, you do not need to grind.
When you’re done, use masking tape to tape the bottom of your countertops and cabinets to protect them from paint.

Next, you want to apply a primer. Note: I didn’t make this up! As I said, I tried the tiles and decided I wanted a whitewashed look.
But if you want full coverage and consistent color on the stone, you’ll want to use a high-quality stone primer.
The first thing I tried was the indoor Kilz outdoor. This is my go to quality primer! It provides great security.
Now it’s time to paint! I tried the brush and the lint-free cloth and liked the look of the lint-free cloth. I applied the color in a circular motion to mimic the capiz pattern.

It took 5 coats of paint to get the coverage I like – which was 3 coats of paint.
Travertine stone is very porous and absorbs color. If you use a primer, you only need one or two coats of paint.
Speaking of the grout lines – I painted over them. And it looks fine. If you want to print them, it will be a lot of work!
When the paint is dry, use a stone or tile sealant. This is what I used. I used a lint free cloth to clean it
