How to Paint a Brick Fireplace What paint should I use on a red brick fireplace?
To ensure durability and ease of cleaning, you’ll want to paint your brick fireplace with something other than paint.
Eggshell, satin or semi-gloss allows you to wipe the surface when it gets dirty. A good interior acrylic paint works well here.
Empty Fireplace Ideas
For my project I used paint from the garage. This is Dove’s Benjamin Moore egg finish.
The finish of the egg is good because it can be washed without light. Paint or chalk can’t be washed off, I personally don’t like glossy paint.
Primer for your brick fireplace before painting is not necessary for the technique I use to allow the brick to “breathe”. Good quality acrylic paint can be used as long as the bricks are clean and completely dry.
When you first wash the brick, it is important to let it dry completely. I recommend waiting at least 24 to 48 hours after washing before painting.
Considering To Paint Or Not To Paint Brick Walls And Fireplaces
NOTE: If you do not use this technique and completely cover the brick fireplace with paint, I recommend that you start it first. You must use 100% premium acrylic primer.
A quart of paint should be enough for most jobs, and if you only have a small stove, you can get a pint.
For this French technique, I add a small amount of paint to a cup of hand paint, maybe a cup and a half, and dilute it with water at a ratio of about 1 water to 4 paint.
NOTE: If you are not sure how rough you want the paint to be, start with more water than I used. If you decide this is what you want, you can always make it smaller by adding more paint.
Should You Paint Your Brick Fireplace?
Once you mix the paint, you can apply it to the brick. This is the technique I used to paint the red brick fireplace.
First, clean the brick if it has soot or dirt on it. Use a vacuum cleaner to remove any ash or dust. If there are black spots, you want to remove as much as possible with a wire brush and a strong cleaner. Our oven is not used much, so there is little moisture in it.
As I worked around the fireplace, I began by placing mortar around the brick. I used a professional brush and pulled it and held the brow for a long time as shown in the picture above. You don’t want to put too much paint on the brush or it will run to the brick below.
NOTE: After applying the mortar, I dip the brush in the paint/water again, put most of it back into the paint cup of my hand, and gently drag the paint brush over the brick at the corner. Our bricks have branch and leaf patterns and I wanted to highlight them.

I basically brushed the paint on the surface, purposely preventing it from going into the prints so they would be darker and contrast with the lighter paint.
All this. I thought it would take a long time, but it’s not that bad.
For a special heater can take 4-5 hours. However, if you only have a brick facade, instead of 4 sides with a planter, you can complete the work in an hour or two. Ours is about 80 – 100 square feet of brick.
The most important thing to remember about this technique is to remove most of the paint and use it while holding the brush at an angle.
